Mammoths conquer Saint Michael's on the road, 6-3

SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT. -- Sophomore Ben Kuzma had 2 goals and 2 assist Tuesday afternoon as the Amherst College men's hockey team improved to 2-0-0 on the season with a 6-3 win over Saint Michael's at the Purple Knight's Cairns Arena.

Amherst is off until Saturday the 26th when the Mammoths hit the road once again for a 3 p.m. game at SUNY-Geneseo.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst trailed by one goal twice in the first period, but after the opening 20 minutes, the game was tied 2-2 thanks to goals from Quinton Fox on the power play and by Matt Toporowski

* The Mammoths took their first lead of the game with their second short-handed goal in two games. Sophomore Max Thiessen stole the puck at his own blue line and blazed in on a breakaway, lifting a shot over the sprawling right pad of St. Mike's goalie Marshall Murphy with 12:35 left in the second period. The Purple Knights tied the game just 35 seconds later, but a little less than three minutes after that, senior captain Joey Verkerke scored a power-play goal with a shot from the left point that beat Murphy on the lower right side for a 4-3 lead.

* Kuzma scored both Amherst goals in the third period as the Mammoths pulled away for the 6-3 victory. Only 3:41 into the frame, he took advantage of a loose puck squirting loose from behind the St. Mike's net to where he was stationed alone in the slow. His quick wrister beat Murphy on the short side for a 5-3 lead.

* Kuzma scored again with 5:59 remaining for a three-goal lead. Some great work on the right boards by Josh Burke and Toporowski allowed Burke to come free with the puck as he skated through the right circle. Tripped up, he poked a pass from his knees to Kuzma in the slot and Kuzma's shot beat Murphy.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst had a tremendous 52-16 advantage in shots on goal.  Mammoth goalie Connor Leslie stopped 13 of the 16 shots he faced on the afternoon.

* Each team was 2 for 5 on the power play, with the Mammoths also adding a short-handed goal.

* Toporowski finished with a goal and an assist, while Burke had two assists.
