#6 Amherst improves to 7-0 with 68-42 win over Lehman

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore Kori Barach and first-year Sylvia Liddle each scored 14 points as the Amherst College women's basketball team remained unbeaten on the season with a 68-42 win over Lehman College on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths, ranked sixth in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll and fourth in the WBCA Division III poll, improved to 7-0 on the season. The Lightning fell to 2-5.

The Mammoths now have a two-week break until returning to action on Wednesday, Dec. 28, to face the Red Hawks of Montclair State at 3 p.m. Eastern time as part of the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The game was a back-and-forth affair in the early part of the first quarter. The Lightning took a 10-7 lead with 5:50 on the clock as sophomore forward Brianna Barnes scored 8 of Lehman's first 10 points.

* The Mammoths reeled off a 9-0 run to take the lead as Barach netted a jumper to put Amherst ahead, then scored the next two baskets to put the Mammoths up, 16-10.

* Sophomore guard Reeya Patel completed a traditional three-point play in the second quarter to cap a spurt of seven straight points and give the Mammoths a 31-21 lead, their largest edge of the first half.

* Liddle hit a three in the final minute of the first half to give the Mammoths a 36-29 lead at halftime.

* Amherst pulled away in a third quarter in which the Mammoths had a 16-3 advantage on the scoreboard. Five different Mammoths scored as part of a 16-1 run to open the quarter while Amherst held Lehman to 0-for-11 shooting from the floor.

* A 12-2 Amherst run over most of the fourth quarter gave the Mammoths a 64-35 lead with three minutes to play when Liddle hit her third three-pointer of the game.



BY THE NUMBERS:

* Barach tallied 9 rebounds and 3 assists to go with her 14 points, while Liddle's 14 points were a career high for the first-year who also contributed 6 rebounds.

* Sophomore forward Maya Cwalina was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor to earn 10 points and Patel also scored 10 points, finishing in double figures for the fourth straight game.

* First-year guard Brooke Ingemi made her collegiate debut and scored her first collegiate points on a three-pointer in the second quarter. Ingemi played for the NESCAC champion women's soccer team in the fall.

* The Mammoths shot 47 percent (28-of-60) in the game and made their three-pointers at a 50 percent (8-of-16) clip, Amherst's best three-point shooting percentage of the season. The Mammoths held the Lightning to 28 percent (16-of-58) field-goal shooting and 14 percent (1-of-7) from beyond the arc.

* Amherst held a 46-34 advantage in rebounds, the third straight game in which the Mammoths have out-rebounded their opponents.

* Barnes tallied a double-double with a game-high 30 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals for the Lightning.
