Pride rally for 73-70 win over Mammoths

AMHERST, Mass. – Pride senior guard Daryl Costa scored 22 points as Springfield College erased a 17-point deficit and rallied for a 73-70 win over the Amherst College men's basketball team on Tuesday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths fell to 3-5, while the Pride improved to 2-5 with the win.

Amherst is back in action on Thursday (Dec. 8), hosting Eastern Nazarene at 7 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths opened the game with the first five points and a 10-0 run capped by a dunk from sophomore center Will Scherer gave Amherst a 21-8 lead with 11 minutes to play in the first half.

* Amherst increased its lead to 15 by the end of the first half as Scherer's layup in the final seconds of the half gave the Mammoths a 42-27 halftime lead. Amherst shot 15-of-32 (47 percent) from the floor and hit 8-of-16 (50 percent) shots from beyond the arc while holding Springfield without a three in the first half.

* The Pride slowly closed the gap in the second half. After sophomore forward Curtis Blische hit a jumper to cut the Amherst lead to 50-40, Costa scored Springfield's next 11 points to make the score 56-51 with 9:20 to play.

* First-year forward Chris Hammond hit a three with 3:10 on the clock to restore Amherst's lead to 67-59 but the Pride followed with consecutive threes from Costa and sophomore forward Jack Meagher before a three from junior guard Zeke Blauner gave the visitors a 68-67 lead, Springfield's first lead of the game, with 40 seconds to play.

* Sophomore guard C.J. Mitchell answered with a long jumper to put the Mammoths back up by one but another three from Blauner gave the Pride a 71-69 lead with 15 seconds to play.

* Meagher came up with a steal on the next possession and hit a pair of free throws after he was fouled with 4.1 seconds to go. Sophomore guard Canin Reynolds got to the free throw line on Amherst's subsequent possession, but with 0.4 seconds on the clock, there wasn't enough time to close the gap.
