Shutout in the Cards as Walker, Mammoths post 2-0 victory

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Senior Caitlin Walker stopped all 27 shots she faced Tuesday night while Alyssa Xu and Angelina Wiater added goals as the Amherst College women's hockey team beat conference rival Wesleyan on the road for the second consecutive evening, this one by a 2-0 margin.

The Mammoths moved to 8-7-0 on the season, 5-5-0 in conference play while Wesleyan slipped to 6-9- overall and 2-8-0 in NESCAC action. Amherst hosts Bowdoin Friday night at 7 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

* Amherst took a 1-0 lead just 2:36 into the game. Kenzie MacDonald won the face-off and Kelsey Stewart collected the puck and dumped into the right corner of the Cardinals' zone. A clearing attempt caromed out to the center of the zone where Julia Weiss batted it back toward the goal. Xu picked it up off a deflection from a Wesleyan stick and fired a shot past the goalie.

* Walker was at the top of her game all night. With 11:46 left in the first, Wesleyan's Sam DeLeo stole the puck neat center ice and broke in one-on-Walker, but the Mammoth keeper stoned the chance with a glove save. With 8:39 left in the second period, DeLeo made a great move in the neutral zone to create a 2-on-1 break into the Amherst zone. DeLeo kept the puck, and Walker smothered her close-range wrist to keep it a 1-0 game.

* Late in the game, the Cardinals pulled their goal and spent over two minutes with a 6-on-5 advantage. However, with just 42 seconds left, Kate Pohl gained possession of the puck just over the blue line and fired a shot at the empty goal. The puck caromed off a Wesleyan defender, right to Wiater a few feet above the face-off circle. She quickly released a shot that found the empty net and sealed with the victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

* Wesleyan finished with a 27-22 advantage in shots. Walker stopped 12 shots in the first period, 10 in the second and five in the third.

* Neither team could score on the power play, with the Mammoths going 0 for 5 and Wesleyan 0 for 2, although the Cardinals did fire off four saves on their final power-play opportunity in the second period, all stopped by Walker.

* Amherst was 32 of 53 face offs. Anna Baxter led the way for the Mammoths, winning 10 of 14 draws.
