Ephs skate to 3-1 win over Mammoths in NESCAC Quarterfinals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Ephs senior Jack Forrest scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to lead Williams College to a 3-1 win over the Amherst College men's ice hockey team in the NESCAC quarterfinals on Saturday at Chapman Rink, repeating the score of the last game these teams played when they met in Amherst last weekend in the final game of the regular season.

The Ephs, the third seed in the NESCAC Tournament, improved to 11-10-1 this season and will advance to the NESCAC semifinals next weekend. The Mammoths, the sixth seed in the tournament, concluded their season at 9-13-2 overall.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

* The Ephs got on the board in the first period when senior forward Niko Karamanis struck with his fourth goal of the season midway through the first period.

* Williams doubled its lead when Forrest scored just under four minutes into the second for his third goal in three games against Amherst this season.

* The Mammoths struck on their only power play of the game when first-year defenseman Max Thiessen scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from classmate Matt Toporowski with just over five minutes to go in the second.

* With the season on the line, the Mammoths pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the final minutes but the Ephs withstood Amherst's shots and sophomore Sean Clarke scored an empty-net goal for the Ephs at the very end of the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

* Junior goalie Evan Ruschil made 19 saves to earn the win for the Ephs, while junior Dan Dachille stopped 20 shots for the Mammoths as the Ephs held a 23-20 edge in shots on goal.

* Each side was whistled for just one minor penalty with the Mammoths converting on their power-play opportunity and successfully killing their only penalty.

* The game marked the final game in Purple and White for the six seniors on the Mammoths: Conor Breen, Matteo Mangiardi, Stephen Rex, Mitchell Shults, Pieter von Steinbergs and Sean Wrenn. All were on the ice for this final game and all were key contributors to the Mammoths, each playing in at least 20 games this season.
