AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore
Rylee Glennon had a goal and assist Sunday while
Caitlin Walker made 26 saves, leading the Amherst College women's hockey team to a big conference win over rival Bowdoin at Orr Rink, 3-0.
Amherst improved yo 9-7-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the NESCAC, landing in sole possession of fourth place. Bowdoin slipped to 9-7-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the conference with its loss. Amherst hosts Trinity Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in another NESCAC contest,
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
* Glennon opened the scoring at the 10:50 mark of the second period with Amherst on the power-play.
Avery Flynn's shot from the blueline was wide of the left post, but the puck bounced to
Angelina Wiater, who instinctively back slid a pass from just left of the crease behind her to Glennon at the bottom of the face-off circle. Glennon craftily placed a wrist shot over the pad on the short side of the goal for the lead.
* Only 62 seconds later, the Mammoths boosted their lead to 2-0. Wiater won the face-off at the right circle.
Leslie Schwartz collected the puck and slid a pass to
Avery Flynn. After the pair boomeranged their passes to each other, Flynn found Glennon in the left circle. Glennon slid the puck into the slot and Xu re-directed it into the bottom right corner of the goal.
* First year
Julia Weiss added an empty-net goal with 1:50 left on the clock in the third period to seal the victory. It was her first collegiate goal.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst is 4-0-1 in its last five games, outscoring its opponents 11-4 over that span.
* The Mammoths held a slim 8-7 advantage in shots after one period of play. Both teams had one power-play opportunity in the opening stanza, but neither team could convert. The shots were equal at the end of the contest, 26-26.
* Walker made 26 saves to post her 3rd shutout of the season, raising her season save percentage to .949 and her lowering her goals against average to 1.34.
