Mammoths settle for split of doubleheader with Bowdoin

AUBURNDALE, FL. -- Nick Giattino tossed five innings of one-run ball while striking out nine batters Tuesday, hurling the Amherst College baseball team to a 10-1 victory over Bowdoin at Lake Myrtle Park in the first game of a doubleheader.

Ultimately, the Mammoths would split the twinbill, taking game one behind Giattino's effort 10-1 but falling to the Polar Bears in the nightcap, 10-5. Both games were scheduled 7-inning affairs. Amherst is now 2-2 after the split, while Bowdoin is 3-3. The Mammoths have Wednesday off before taking on Franklin & Marshall Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Game 1

* The Mammoths struck for five runs in the first and added another in the second to build a 6-1 lead. After one out in the first, Jack McDermott drew a walk. Daniel Qin followed with a single, and a throwing error Luke Padian's groundball allowed McDermott to score the game's first run. After a Chris Murphy single loaded the bases,Christian Fagnant tapped a slow roller to second. He beat the throw to first and the throw got away, allowing three runners to score. After Fagnant advanced to third on a passed ball,Jack Dove scored him with a groundout to shortstop.

* In the Amherst second, Jack Boyle singled and stole second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Qin cracked a two-out, RBI-double to right field for a 6-1 lead.

* Amherst had eight hits in the victory. Qin was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. McIntyre was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

* Giattino picked up his first win of the 2022 season, going the first frames and allowing three hits and two walks while striking out nine.

Game 2

* Amherst jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings, but a nine-run top of the fifth for the Polar Bears was too much to overcome.

* In the Amherst third, Camden New led off with a single and, one out later, stole second. Jack Boyle came through with an RBI-single through the right side of the infield, scoring New and taking second on the throw. McIntyre followed with a long double to right-center field that scored Boyle for the 2-0 lead.

* Boyle was 2 for 3 with an RBI and run scored. Padian was 2 for 3 with a run scored.

* Ian Donahue pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the loss.
