SPRINGFIELD, MA. -- Zac Schuette's fifth goal of the game 30 seconds in to the overtime period Wednesday night gave the Springfield College men's lacrosse team a 15-14 victory over their counterparts from Amherst College on Stagg Field.
Amherst saw its two-game win streak snapped and fell to 3-2 overall while the Pride improved to 3-4 overall. The Mammoths take on #5 St. John Fisher in Rochester, N.Y. Saturday at 12 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst built a 5-2 lead after one quarter Wednesday night. Four straight goals in the final 7:15 of the stanza erased a 2-1 deficit.
Brock Gonzalez got the run started with the tying goal with 7:15 to go and
Carter Tate,
Jake Bennett and
PJ Clementi followed with scores.
* Down 7-6 in the final seconds of the second stanza, Gonzalez scored off an assist from
Tanyr Krummenacher with just nine seconds left in the first half to send the two teams to the locker room deadlocked, 7-7.
* After a Krummenacher in the first minute of the second period gave the Mammoths an 8-7 lead, Springfield countered with four consecutive goals and took an 11-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
* Tate scored in the first minute of the final 15 to make it 11-10, but the Pride countered with their own goal for a 12-10 lead. Gonzalez then scored three straight tallies, the first coming with 6:03 left in the game and the third with only 4:19 left, to give the Mammoths a 13-12 lead. After Springfield re-tied the game,
Carter Tate put Amherst up 14-13 with 2:34 remaining off a assist from Clementi. The Pride forced overtime when Mason Nocito scored with 1:52 left.
* In the OT, Springfield was awarded the face-off on a violation, took a time out six seconds in and scored the game winner 24 seconds later. Schuette finished the game with 5 goals and 3 assists for the Pride.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The stats were as even as the game's score would indicate. Amherst held a 46-36 advantage in shots. Groundballs were 33-33 each team, Face-offs were 16-16.
