Mammoths snap losing streak with 6-5 win over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Back-to-back home runs from Camden New and Jack Sampedro in the fourth inning Monday helped the Amherst College baseball team put an end to a six-game losing skid with a 6-5 victory over Salve Regina at the Seahawks' Reynolds Field. 

The come-from-behind victory improved Amherst's overall record to 6-13 while SRU fell to 12-8-2 on the season. The Mammoths are back in action Wednesday when they host Western New England University at 4 p.m. on Memorial Field. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Trailing 2-0 after one inning, the Mammoths' comeback began in the third when Daniel Qin drove a double into the left-centerfield gap that scored and scored Christian Limon, who had drawn a lead-off walk. 

* Down 2-1 entering the top of the fourth Mammoth first-year Jack McDermott led off with a single and took second on Jackson Reydel's groundout. With two outs, New destroyed a pitch that cleared the fence in left field and the elevated row of hedges beyond it for a 3-2 lead. Sampedro hit the very next pitch deep to left for a solo blast and a 4-2 lead. It was the first collegiate home run for both New, a sophomore, and Sampedro, a first-year,

* In the Amherst fifth, Jack Boyle laced a lead-off single and stole second, advancing to third on a Chris Murphy groundout. McDermott lined an RBI-single for a 5-2 lead, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Jack Dove singled him home for a 6-2 lead.

* First-year right-hander Ben Goff was on his game, scattering seven hits over six innings of work while walking two, striking out two and giving up three runs. He earned his first collegiate win from the bump. 

* Ian Donahue threw a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the season.
