No-Hitter Alert: Nick Giattino tosses hitless gem in Mammoths' split with Trinity

AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore Nick Giattino made Amherst College baseball history one year ago when he combined with Alan Dai on a no-hitter at Hamilton College.

Saturday at Amherst's own Memorial Field, he one-upped himself, tossing a complete-game no-hitter in a 5-0 win over Trinity College in a seven-inning contest. It was the fifth Mammoth no-hitter in the last 50 years, and the second Giattino has been a part of in two years.

Trinity got off the mat to take the second game of the doubleheader by a 6-3 score. Amherst saw its record go to 8-14-1 overall while the Bantams left town with an 11-12 overall mark. The Mammoths are back in action Tuesday when they face nearby Elms College in Chicopee at 7 p.m.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Giattino faced only two batters over the minimum in his masterpiece: He retired the first eight batters he faced until a two-out walk in the third. That runner was thrown out trying to steal by catcher Christian Fagnant however. In the fourth, he hit the second batter of the inning and then balked the runner to second before fanning the next two Bantams on swinging third strikes to end the only threat of the game.

* Including those two strikeouts to end the fourth inning, Giattino retired the final 11 batters he would face, fanning four of them. He final K came as the second out in the top of the seventh. He retired the final batter on a groundball to third baseman Chris Murphy, whose calm throw to first ended the game and set off a exuberant celebration in the middle of the infield.

* Amherst gave Giattino all the run support he would need on this day in the first. Jack McDermott beat out an infield single and took second on a groundout. Luke Padian lined a two-out, opposite-field single to left to score McDermott with the game's first run.

* The Mammoths added a run in the second as Daniel Qin reached on an error and singles by Murphy and Fagnant loaded the bases. A double-play grounder allowed Qin to score. In the fourth, Qin was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a balk and a groundout before Fagnant's RBI-single made it 3-0.

* The Mammoths finished with 10 hits in the win. Fagnant went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Murphy was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Qin was 0 for 1 with 3 runs scored.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst scored single runs in the first and second to build a 2-1 lead. In the second, Qin and Murphy lined back-to-back one-out singles. A wild pitch put them on second and third until Christian Limon scored Qin with a grounder to second.

* With the score tied 2-2, Trinity took a 6-2 lead with a four-run sixth inning. The Mammoths loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Qin singled to left, Murphy was hit by a pitch and pinch-hitter Fagnant singled to right. But a pop up, a sacrifice fly from Ryan McIntyre to make it 6-3 and a groundout ended the game.

* Jacob Ribitzki started for the Mammoths and went the first five frames, allowing only three hits and one walk while fanning three and giving up two runs, boith earned. Sam Robin relieved and took the loss, falling to 0-2.

* Amherst had nine hits in the defeat. Qin was 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored. McDermott was 2 for 4.,
