Mammoths top Wesleyan 7-6 in split of Doubleheader

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Amherst College baseball team rode a seven-run second inning to a 7-6 victory over Little 3 and NESCAC West Division rival in the first game of a conference doubleheader Saturday.

Wesleyan came back to take the nightcap by a 20-5 score. The Mammoths are now 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the NESCAC's West Division while the Cardinals sit at 9-8 overall and 2-1 in West Division play. The Mammoths are back in action Monday when they hit the road for a 3:30 p.m. contest against Rhode Island College.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst exploded for seven runs on eight hits in the top of the second. Chris Murphy went 2 for 2 -- in the inning. He ignited the outburst with a single to left, took second on an error and scored when Daniel Chin roped a double to right. Luke Padian followed with a double to right of his own that scored Qin. Camden New then singled home Padian for a 3-0 lead.

* New stole second and scored when Jack Boyle singled to left. Boyle stole second and scored when Jack Dove crushed a ball to left that fell oveer the fence for a 2-0 lead and a 6-0 lead. With outs, Jackson Reydel singled to left, stole second and scored when Murphy lined his second hit of the inning to center.

* The Cardinals climbed back into with two in the bottom half of the inning and three more in the fifth. Nick Giattino went the first five frames for the Mammoths, but his most important may have been the fifth as he kept the Cardinals from scoring with a flyout and two strikeouts.

*Alan Dai came on and went the final two frames for the save. He retired Wesleyan 1-2-3 in the sixth. After allowing a double and sacrifice fly to make it 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Dai induced a groundout before striking out the final batter of the game.

* The Mammoths had 11 hits. Murphy was 3 for 3 with an RBI and run scored while Qin finished 2 for 4.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

*  Amherst scored four times in the top of the first of this nine-inning contest. Wesleyan countered with five. Amherst scored one in its second to tie it 5-5. The Cardinals came back with three in the bottom of the second to take an 8-5 advantage and never looked back, rolling to the 20-5 victory.

* Murphy went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI-singles to finish the doubleheader 5 for 7. Luke Padian was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
