BRUNSWICK, Maine – Polar Bears senior attack Donal Mullane scored five goals as Bowdoin College used a second-quarter surge to tally a 15-12 win over the Amherst College men's lacrosse team in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon at Whittier Field.
The Polar Bears, ranked 11th in the nation in the latest USILA Division III Poll, remained unbeaten at 9-0 overall and 5-0 in NESCAC play with their first win over the Mammoths since 2014. The 15th-ranked Mammoths fell to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the NESCAC.
The Mammoths are back in action on Wednesday (April 6) at 6 p.m. with a NESCAC duel at 17th-ranked Wesleyan.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths struck first when sophomore attack James Bennett scored his ninth goal of the season just over a minute into the game. Mullane scored twice to swing the lead to the Polar Bears before junior midfielder
Tanyr Krummenacher scored for the Mammoths to level the score at 2-2. Mullane set up senior attack Chris Fowler to give the Polar Bears the lead with six minutes to go in the first and sophomore attack Will Bryne added another Bowdoin goal 37 seconds later.
* Sophomore attack
Brock Gonzalez scored a man-up goal for the Mammoths 13 seconds into the second quarter but the Polar Bears then reeled off seven unanswered goals to take control of the contest. Gonzalez scored again on Amherst's next man-up opportunity and senior captain
PJ Clementi struck with seven seconds on the clock in the second quarter.
* The two sides traded goals in the third quarter as junior midfielder
Bayard DeMallie scored his ninth goal of the season and Krummenacher netted his second of the game but both Amherst goals were answered by Bowdoin tallies within the next minute.
* The Mammoths launched a comeback effort in the fourth quarter as Gonzalez, Clementi and sophomore midfielder
Connor Guest each scored in a two-minute span but Amherst was held off the scoreboard for the final five minutes of the game and the Polar Bears held on for the win.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Gonzalez led the Mammoths with four goals and continued his streak of scoring a hat trick in every game of his rookie season. Clementi netted a hat trick and has also scored in every game this season.
* First-year goalie Robert Hobbs made 16 saves for Bowdoin as the Mammoths outshot the Polar Bears by a 53-44 margin and held a 28-25 edge in shots on goal.
* The Mammoths were 2-for-5 on extra-man opportunities and were perfect on the penalty kill for the third straight game, maintaining the best penalty-kill percentage in the NESCAC.
* The Mammoths recorded 9 caused turnovers and turned the ball over only 9 times while the Polar Bears committed 16 turnovers.
