Alex Giacobbe scored a career-high four goals and classmate
Mitch Likins made a career-high 21 saves in goal as the Amherst College men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 16-10 win over Trinity College on Wednesday evening in NESCAC action on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
With their fifth straight win, the Mammoths (9-5, 7-3 NESCAC) locked up the third seed in the NESCAC Tournament. Amherst, ranked 19th in the nation in the latest USILA Division III Poll, will host archrival Williams in the NESCAC quarterfinals on Saturday (April 30) at 1 p.m. The Bantams, already eliminated from playoff contention entering tonight's game, finish their season at 6-8 overall and 2-8 in NESCAC play.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed. Junior midfielder
Tanyr Krummenacher scored first, putting Amherst on the board 91 seconds into the game. After a nine-minute scoreless stretch, Krummenacher set up a goal from senior midfielder
Carter Tate, then Tate assisted sophomore midfielder
Connor Guest to give the Mammoths a 3-0 lead before senior attack Connor McCulloch scored for the Bantams.
* First-year
Nicholas Kopp, who won 13 of 23 face-offs, opened up the second quarter with his third goal of the season to give the Mammoths a 6-1 lead and Amherst took a 7-2 lead into halftime.
* Krummenacher and junior midfielder
Bayard DeMallie completed hat tricks in third quarter while Guest scored his second of the game. DeMallie kicked off a string of six unanswered goals for Amherst that stretched into the fourth quarter, three of which were scored by Giacobbe while senior captain
PJ Clementi scored his 30th goal of the season and Tate netted his second of the game.
* Giacobbe added his fourth goal later in the fourth quarter to give the Mammoths a 16-6 lead. The Bantams scored four goals over the final four minutes before the clock ran out on Trinity's season. Senior midfielder Luke Valentino netted Trinity's final goal with 23 seconds left on the clock.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Likins made 21 saves to earn the win before giving way to senior
Jack Siegel, who stopped three shots over the final 5:11. The Bantams held a 53-47 advantage in shots and a 34-30 edge in shots on goal.
* Krummenacher's hat trick was his fourth of the season. He has scored in every game of Amherst's five-game winning streak.
