ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Mammoths came back from a six-goal deficit to tie the game but the rally fell just short as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology held on for a 13-12 win over the Amherst College men's lacrosse team in the round of 32 of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
The Mammoths conclude the season with a 10-7 record after making the NCAA Tournament for the seventh consecutive season. Amherst was ranked 15th in the latest USILA Division III Poll. The 13th-ranked Engineers remain unbeaten at 17-0 and advance to face defending national champion RIT in the round of 16.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Engineers came out strong, scoring the first six goals of the game with sophomore attack Heath Nilsen scoring his second of the game early in the second quarter to give MIT the 6-0 lead.
* The Mammoths quickly got back on track as senior midfielder
Carter Tate scored back-to-back goals to kick off a 6-1 Amherst run in the second quarter. Junior midfielder
Tanyr Krummenacher also scored twice in that stretch before sophomore attack
Jake Bennett brought the Mammoths back within one goal with his 11th goal of the season.
* Graduate student Ryan Gebhardt scored for the Engineers as time expired in the second quarter and MIT took an 8-6 lead to halftime.
* Each side scored a pair of goals in the third quarter with first-year attack
Alex Giacobbe netting his seventh goal of the season to once again bring the Mammoths within one before Gebhardt restored the two-goal lead for MIT.
* The Mammoths evened the score early in the fourth quarter. Sophomore midfielder
Connor Guest scored his 15th goal of the season just under a minute into the final frame as he took a hit that MIT was penalized for. On the ensuing extra-man opportunity, junior midfielder
Bayard DeMallie tied the game at 10-10 with his 27th goal of the season.
* The Engineers went back up by two goals before Clementi scored with six minutes to go with a goal that was quickly answered by MIT midfielder Eric Pence. Clementi brought the Mammoths back within one with his fourth goal of the game with 20 seconds to go. First-year
Nicholas Kopp won the ensuing face-off and Clementi had a shot in the closing seconds of the game but MIT goalie Lukas Drexler-Bruce made his 15th save of the game to seal the victory for the Engineers.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Clementi led the Mammoths with four goals and two assists in his final game for the Mammoths. Krummenacher and Tate scored a pair of goals each for Amherst as Krummenacher closed the season with an eight-game goal-scoring streak.
* Gebhart led the Engineers with four goals while Nilsen added a hat trick.
* Kopp won 18 of 27 face-offs for the Mammoths and picked up eight ground balls as the Mammoths held a 31-30 edge in ground balls.
