Mammoths sweep Bowdoin in NESCAC Tournament Quarterfinal Series

BRUNSWICK, Me. -- Jack Dove went 6 for 11 with 3 RBIs and 4 runs scored Saturday to spearhead an offensive attack that produced 26 runs and 31 hits on the day as the Amherst College baseball team -- fourth-seeded out of the NESCAC West Division -- stunned Bowdoin College -- top-seed out of the East Division -- with a 16-7, 9-2 sweep of their NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal, best-of-three series played at Bowdoin's Pickard Field.

Amherst evened its record at 16-16-1. The Mammoths will take part in the double-elimination part of the NESCAC tournament with this weekend's three other quarterfinal winners next week at Trinity College.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths set the tone for the day with a four-run top of the first in the opener. They would never trail over the course of both ballgames Saturday.

* The four-run first featured an RBI-single from Jackson Reydel and a two-run double from Chris Murphy

* Amherst upped its lead to 9-0 with a four-run fifth inning that was highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Daniel Qin, and a two-run jack from lead-off hitter Ryan McIntyre. Bowdoin would get back into the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth that was highlighted by a grand slam home run off the bat of Nick Merrill.

*Up 9-6, the Mammoths put the game away with eight runs over the last three innings. In the Mammoth's seventh, Jack McDermott accounted for all the runs when he crushed a grand slam home run over the right-field fence for a 13-6 lead. Dove had an RBI-triple in the eighth and Murphy capped the slugfest with an RBI-single in the ninth.

* Nick Giattino earned the win, tossing the first 5 1/3 innings for the Mammoths. First-year Tyson Luna came on and threw 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief. Luna allowed one hit, did not walk a batter and fanned four.

* Murphy was 4 for 6 with two doubles, 3  RBIs and 3 runs scored in the win. Dove was 3 for 6 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. McDermott was 1 for 3 with 5 RBis and two runs scored.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst scored one in the first and two in the second to build a 3-0 lead. In the first McIntyre singled, took third on a Reydel double and scored on a wild pitch. In the second, Christian Fagnant led off with a single, Jack Boyle ripped a single and McDermott made it 2-0 with an RBI-double. McDermott then lined a shot to center field that scored Reydel from third and went as a sacrifice fly.

* Jacob Ribitzki got the start for Amherst and was in fine form. He allowed a two-run home run in the third that made it 3-2, but did not allow another run while going the distance for a second-straight weekend and finishing a nine-inning complete game. He allowed seven hits and a single walk while striking out seven as he improved to 5-2 on the year.

* The Mammoths had 14 hits in the nightcap, led by McIntyre, who finished 4 for 6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dove was 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Reydelm Fagnant and Boyle all finished with two hits each.
