Mammoths drop pair of hard-fought matches at NYU Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Amherst College volleyball team picked up some strong performances Saturday, but ultimately fell to both Wheaton (MA) College 3-2 and host NYU, 3-0, to even their record at 2-2.

Next up for the Mammoths is NESCAC rival Hamilton College, home in LeFrak Gymnasium Friday at 7 p.m.

Senior Caroline Tilton and junior Carly Cooper were named to the NYU Invitational All-Tournament team. Tilton led Amherst with 18 kills over the two matches Saturday. Cooper notched 36 assists.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

* After dropping the opening two sets against the Lyons, 25-22 and 25-15, Amherst bounced back with 25-13 and 25-22 victories to force a fifth and deciding set. Alexandra Trotfort, Kinsey Cronin and Kaili Maurice led the way in the third set win, which ended on a Cooper ace. The tightly-contested fourth set was tied 12-12 prior to a 7-2 Mammoth run that gained them some separation, sparked by kills from Tilton, Trofort and Anaya Thomas.

* Cronin and Tilton combined on a block that gave Amherst a 23-17 lead, but Wheaton reeled off six consecutive points to make it a one-point match before kills by Cronin and Tilton off Cooper sets ended the set and tied the match, 2-2.

* Early kills by Cronin and Tilton along with aces from Lizzie Papalia and Renee Liou had the Mammoths tied with Wheaton  8-8, but the Lyons scored the final seven points of the set to take it 15-8 and the match 3-2.

* Papalia finished the match with a team-high 12 digs. Trofort had 11 kills and Cronin nine.

* Matched up against the hosts from NYU, the Mammoths fell in three sets, 25-13, 25-23, 25-20. In the second set, down 23-21, key kills from Charlotte Rasmussen and Chloe Chanren tied the game at 23 before the Violets scored the final two points.

* Chanren led the team with seven kills and Cooper in digs with 12.
