BOSTON, Mass. – Four first half goals helped the #11 Amherst College women's soccer team earn a convincing win versus non-conference opponents, the Emerson College Lions, in an away game on Tuesday night on Rotch Field in Boston.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Senior
Isabel Stern capitalized on a misplay by an Emerson defender in front of the goal. With nimble footwork, Stern dribbled past Emerson's goalkeeper Amara Schaub and confidently dispatched the ball into the lower right corner of the goal.
* It only took another three minutes for Amherst to double their lead. From the left side, Junior
Abby Schwartz powered the ball into the top right corner.
The Mammoths' next two goals arrived within 56 seconds of each other. The whole Amherst team worked together to apply constant pressure to Emerson's players whenever they had possession of the ball. Emerson's defenders struggled and panicked as they were constantly rushed by Amherst players and - in a similar fashion to the first goal - Amherst's third and fourth goals came from Emerson defenders making miscues in critical areas of the pitch.
* Junior
Ally Deegan scored in the 43rd minute and Sophomore
Charlotte McGuire clinically put away the fourth goal, as the Mammoths' attacked ruthlessly whenever they were given chances in front of goal.
* Amherst continued to dominate in the second half of the match, taking eight shots and testing the Emerson goalkeeper to make strong saves on five of these occasions. It was evident that Amherst's four goals in the first half was enough to secure the win as the game petered out and Emerson struggled to create opportunities to score.
