NEW LONDON, Conn. -- For the second day in a row, the league-leading Amherst College men's hockey team needed a third-period rally on the road.
And for the second day in a row, the Mammoths created that rally, scoring three times in a five-minute span of the final stanza to skate past Connecticut College, 4-3, at the Dayton Arena. It was the eighth consecutive victory over the Camels for Amherst, which improved to 9-3-2 on the season and 8-1-0 in conference play. The Camels fell to 2-11-0 overall and 0-8-0 in the NESCAC.
Amherst is back in action Friday, Jan. 20 for a road game at Hamilton College. The puck drop is 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:Â
* After a back-and-forth beginning to the contest, Amherst scored first off a rebound goal from Zach Murray at the 15:04 mark. Just two minutes later the Camels answered with a score of their own
*Â In the final frame, the Mammoths took advantage of several opportunities. Following a five-minute major penalty given to Conn., Amherst capitalized on the man advantage on a goal by
Ryan Tucker. Just four minutes later, after another Conn infraction,
Michael Pitts scored a rebound goal on the power play to give Amherst the 3-2 lead. Under one minute later, Pitts came through again for the Mammoths, scoring off his own face-off in the Conn defensive zone to increase the lead to 4-2.
* Amherst led 4-3 in the final seconds when the Camels pulled their goalie with a face-off in the Amherst zone. Conn. won the face-off and got off a shot, but senior captain
Joey Verkerke was there to block it.Â

Alex Wisco earned the victory for the Mammoths, stopping 15 shots. Kelln Beauton made 18 saves for the Camels.Â
