#6 MIT swims to 168.5-110.5 victory over #19 Amherst

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Gabriele Lunardi won two distance races for the Mammoths as the Amherst College men's swimming and diving team fell at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by a 168.5-110.5 margin on Saturday afternoon at the Zesiger Center.

The Engineers, ranked sixth in the nation in the latest CSCAA Division III poll, improved to 9-2 this season with their third straight dual meet win, while the 19th-ranked Mammoths fell to 4-3.

The Mammoths are back in the pool tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 29), hosting Springfield for the final dual meet of the season. Amherst's seniors will be honored before their final meet at Pratt Pool.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Lunardi kicked off the individual events with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle, swimming a personal-best time of 9:33.18. Lunardi has competed in the 1000 free three times this season and won all three, setting a new personal best each time. First-year Jack D'Alessandro finished second in 9:52.15.

* Lunardi went on to win the 500-yard freestyle, his fourth career win in the event, with a season-best time of 4:38.07. Junior Will Taylor finished second in 4:48.98.

* Sophomore Jaden Olson continued his dominance in the 100-yard backstroke, touching in 51.04 seconds to win the event for the fifth time in five starts this season.

* First-year Jonah Luetke made it an Amherst sweep in the backstroke events, capturing the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.28 for his fifth win in the event this season.
