Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Mammoths ice Mules in battle for first place, 3-0

WATERVILLE, Me. -- Sophomore Matt Toporowski scored twice Saturday afternoon as the Amherst College men's hockey team scored three power-play goals to emerge victorious in a battle for the top spot in the NESCAC, 3-0, over Colby at the Mules' Jack Kelley Rink.

Amherst improved to 7-3-2 on the season and 6-1 in NESCAC play while the Mules fell to 7-4-0 overall and 5-2 in the conference. 

The Mammoths are off until Friday when they travel to Medford to take on Tufts University. Puck drop is 7 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The first period remained scoreless with the Mules outshooting Amherst 9-7

* First year Ryan Corcoran broke a scoreless tie late in the second period with the first of three Amherst power-play goals on the day. Classmate Josh Burke and Corcoran played a little give-and-go, with Corcoran circling into the high slot from right to left and snapping a low shot through a crowd in front of the goal and into the lower right-hand corner of the net with 7:40 remaining in the second stanza.

* Just over two minutes later, Amherst doubled its lead on another power play goal, with Toporowski scoring the first of his two goals off an assist from Bobby Luca to make it 2-0 with 5:43 remaining in the period. 

* In the final period, the Mules had their share of chances but were unable to score. Toporowski would add one more goal this period off an assist from senior captain Joey Verkerke

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Alex Wisco came on in relief of Connor Leslie in goal for the Mammoths and stopped all 25 shots he faced over the final 58:25. Leslie played the first 1:27 and made three saves before coming out of the game.

* Colby out shot Amherst, 28-25, in the game. 

* There were 9 penalties in the game, 5 assessed to the Mules. The Mammoths went 3 for 4 on the power-play.
