SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --
Muffie Mazambani scored twice in the third quarter Thursday night as the #14th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team blanked Springfiedl College, 4-0, on the Pride's Stagg Field.
The win moved Amherst to 7-5 overall this season. Springfield fell to 5-8. The Mammoths are off for a week before hitting the road again Thursday, October 19th for a 6:30 p.m. game at WPI.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst scored the only goal of the first half off a penalty corner opportunity -- a recurring theme as three of its four goals on the night would occur off of those chances -- just 4 minutes and 17 seconds into the game.

Kate Smith inserted the corner to Mazambani, who fired a shot on goal which was stopped by Pride goalkeeper Remy Niland. However, in the scrum that ensued, Mammoth
Justine Liguori was able to poke a shot pas the keeper and a Pride defender for the one-goal advantage.
* The Mammoths had a couple of more dangerous chances in the opening stanza -- a wicked backhand by
Kat Mason was stopped by Niland and a Mazambani blast from the top of the circle off a penalty corner went wide -- but the Mammoths still led 1-0 as the second quarter began.
* Neither team could must much offense in the second half as the Mammoths midfield of
Abbey Kays,
Maya Harrington, Liguori, Mason and the backline of Smith,
Charlotte Domittner and Issa Lattuada did a great job breaking up the Pride offensive rushes and creating counterattacks. Amherst held Springfield to one shot in the game.
* Amherst added to its lead 2:46 into the second half when Mazambani received a pass from Maynard at the top of the circle, fake to her right, dribbled around a defender to her left and fired a shot into the lower left-corner for the two-goal lead.
* With 7:47 remaining in the frame, Mazambani oiutraced a Pride defender for a long pass into the circle. She collected the ball to the left of the goal, and pass it back to
Sam Maynard, who dribbled toward the goal and delivered a backhand pass to the the center of the goal, where Mazambani had stationed herself and was in perfect position to redirect he ball into the goal for a 3-0 lead.
* The Mammoths final goal came with 3:03 left in the game. Off a penalty corner, Smith collected a pass and directed a pass toward the net that Mason was able to quicly redirect into the goal for the four-goal advantage and her second goal of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst finished with a 20-1 advantage in shots. The mammoths held an 11-1 edge in penalty corners.

Sara Nidus started in goal for the Mammoths and played the first three quarters while first-year
Grace Puchalski played the fourth quarter. Neither made a save. Niland finished with nine saves for the Pride.
