Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Josh Burke scores twice as Mammoths skate to 4-2 win over Beavers

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore forward Josh Burke scored twice to help the Amherst College men's ice hockey team secure a 4-2 win over Babson College on Sunday afternoon at the Babson Skating Center.

Burke netted the first and last of Amherst's four goals, marking his first two goals of the season, helping the Mammoths improve to an overall record of 2-2-0, while snapping Babson's six-game unbeaten streak and dropping the Beavers to 5-4-2.

The Mammoths will face the Wesleyan Cardinals this Friday (Dec. 1) at 7 p.m. in Middletown, Connecticut.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* 7:38 into the opening period, Burke blocked a shot made by Nolan Woudenberg, knocking the puck in front of him into a fast break up the left side, finding the back of the net and staking the Mammoths to a 1-0 lead.

* With 15:26 left in the second period, Amherst goaltender Connor Leslie dove on the puck to take it out of play when Babson winger Matt Cormier carried it just outside the crease, shutting down one of the Beavers' best initial offensive opportunities.

* Amherst's second goal was initiated by Matt Toporowski, who picked up the puck in the right corner of the Babson zone and delivered a pass to Ben Ritter in the high slot, who took the wrist shot just off to the left of sophomore goaltender Nate Mueller's pads at 16:55 into the second period.

* Seconds after Babson won the face-off at center ice, Toporowski picked up the clear and made a swift pass to Burke in the left face off circle for a quick give-and-go pass right back to him in the low slot for a one-timer shot into the goal at 17:09.

* The Beavers answered with their first goal with 2:06 left in the second period. Egan Schmitt broke up Amherst's offensive movement for winger Brendan Kennedy to pick up the loose puck. Kennedy passed to Ryan Murphy in the low slot where he flicked it just past Leslie less than a minute after giving up two goals in 14 seconds.

* At the 2:31 mark of the third period, Babson seized the opportunity on their initial power play against the Mammoths. Schmitt skillfully navigated a one-on-one situation with the goaltender, propelling the Beavers to within one goal of leveling the score.

* Amherst's final goal was orchestrated by first-year Vincent Velocci, who forced the puck free from a battle behind the net, where Burke took it into the crease and secured his second goal of the afternoon at 4:01.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Beavers held a 29-23 advantage over the Mammoths with shots on goal, but junior Leslie made 27 saves. Mueller stopped 19 shots on the other end for Babson.

* Babson won 36 out of 69 faceoffs. Senior Thomas Kramer won 11 out of the 19 draws he took and Schmitt won 10 out of his 18.
