AMHERST, Mass. --
Kori Barach scored 19 points to lead four Mammoth scorers in double-figures Monday night as the Amherst College women's basketball team stayed unbeaten with a 70-55 victory over New Jersey City University in LeFrak Gymnasium.
Amherst improved to 5-0 while the Gothic Knights saw their record even at 2-2. The Mammoths will be at Wesleyan Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst had early leads of 9-0 and 15-2 in the opening quarter.
Reeya Patel got things started early when on the Mammoths' first possession, she drained a three-pointer. She then grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast for a lay-up which made it 5-0. After a
Alix Stuart block, Barach drove the baseline on the other end and scored the lay-in plus the foul, hitting the freebie to make it 8-0.
* New Jersey City struggled to find its rhythm early on, going 1 for 10 from the field,
Annie McCarthy, who had 11 of her 14 points in the first half, drained the first of her three treys from the top of the key for a 12-2 lead. Moments later
Laura Mendell scored off a transition lay-up for a 14-2 advantage with 4:44 left in the opening stanza.
* With just under two minutes in the quarter, Barach banked home a three-pointer from the right wing for an 18-7 lead. Those were the final points. The Mammoths held the Gothic Knights to 18.8 percent shooting (3 for 16) from the floor. Tahirah Kelley scored all seven of the visitors' points in the quarter
* Both teams racheted up the defensive effort to start the second quarter and the Mammoths were held with out a field goal for nearly five minutes, but they only allowed five points in that span as well, and still led 21-12 when McCarthy knocked down a three-point off the left elbow to make it 24-12. Patel then scored off a feed underneath the basket by a driving Mendell and, following a Barach steal, the two flipped roles as Mendell scored underneath from a Patel feed to make it 28-12 Amherst with 4:28 remaining in the second stanza.
* NJCU cut its deficit to 14 before McCarthy drove the baseline and flipped in a reverse lay-up that allowed the Mammoths to go into the locker room at the half up 14, 35-21.
* NJCU's All-American guard Demaris Rodriguez, who was held scoreless in the first quarter and to seven points in the first half, got going in the third, netting 11 points. But as hard as the Gothic Knights fought to get back into the game, they could never get closer than eight points over the final 20 minutes. A big part of that was the duo of Barach and Patel. Barach scored 11 of her 19 in the second half, and Patel nine of her 16. In the fourth quarter, the two combined to score 15 of the team's 17 points.
