AMHERST, Mass. --
Alyssa Xu's third-period goal was the difference Sunday afternoon as the second-ranked Amherst College women's ice hockey team rallied for a 2-1 victory over Oswego State at Orr Rink.
The Mammoths improved to 7-0-1 with the victory, while Oswego saw its record even at 5-5-1. Amherst will host Vermont State University-Castleton Tuesday for a 3 p.m. afternoon special at Orr Rink.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The first period was a fairly even one, with Amherst mustering 11 shots and Oswego 10. The Mammoths had the only power-play of the stanza, but Lakers' goaltender Lexi levy made a pair of big saves to keep the game scoreless heading into the second.
* Oswego took the lead early in the middle period after Mammoth goalie
Natalie Stott made a nice save on a shot by Mack Hull. The rebound bounced out to the slot and Laker Simone Bednarik fired it home to give the visitors a lead.
* The Mammoths pushed for the equalizer and finally found it with 7:52 remaining. On the power-play, a face-off from the right circle in the Oswego zone was won by
Maeve Reynolds. The puck slid back to
Rylee Glennon on the right point and she quickly moved it over to
Gretchen Dann on the left point. Dann fired a shot on goal immediately that found its way through a crowd and which was re-directed by
Anna Baxter, past Levy and into the net with 7:52 on the clock.
* There were a total of six penalties called in the second period and five more whistled in the third. Each team had a partial 5-on-3 power play which was killed off by their opponents. Oswego did not score on either of its power-play chances, managing only one shot which Stott stopped.
* Amherst took the lead early in the third. Xu did some gritty work in the right corner of the Lakers' zone, winning the puck, skating behind the net by fishing it out in front to Reynolds in the slot at the last moment. Reynolds took a backhand which Levy saved. The puck bounded out to
Emily Hohmann in the high slot. She quickly fired a bouncing puck back toward the net that Xu, who had circled back around to the low slot, got her stick on and re-directed it past Levy with 16:50 remaining in the game.
* Oswego's comeback attempt was thwarted by having to kill off four penalties down the stretch, although they did get one more power-play opportunity as well, which the Mammoths killed off.
* With 55 seconds left and down one, the Lakers pulled their goalie for a 6-on-5 advantage. After each team used its timeout with 40 ticks on the clock, the Lkaers won a face-off to the left of Stott. With 21.7 seconds to go, ull ripped off a close-range shot from the left of the goal that Stott was able to smother.
