Mammoths hold on for 4-3 road win at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Josh Burke scored two goals and added an assist Friday night at the Amherst College men's hockey team held on for a 4-3 victory over rival Williams College at the Ephs' Lansing Chapman Rin.

Amherst improved to 4-3-0 overall with the win, 2-2-0 in NESCAC play, while Williams fell to 1-6-0. The Mammoths are at Middlebury today for a 3 p.m. puck drop. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst took a 1-0 lead with 2:52 left in the first period. Ben Ritter slid a pass to Vincent Velecci in his own zone and Velecci got just enough on the disc to push t forward to Burke, who skated into the Williams end, across the slot left to right and into the right face--off circle where he snapped off a lw shot to the far post that beat te Ephs' goaltender for the one-goal advantage. 

* Only 4:14 into the second stanza, the Mammoths made it 2-0. In a scrum just inside the Williams zone, Burke lost the puck, then stole it back from an unsuspecting Eph. He semi-floated a pass to the center of the ice, where teammate Matt Toporowski skated on to it in stride and went in on a breakaway, beating the Williams' goaltender to the top right of the net. 

* Williams fought back with two goals before periods end to tie things up 2-2. 

* The Mammoths regained the lead on a nice individual effort by Ryan Tucker, who was able to push the puck past a Williams defenseman and break in to the Ephs' zone and fired a shot on goal.from the left face-off circle. the rebound went off an Eph defenseman's skate and into the net for a 3-2 Amherst lead only 1:26 into the third period. 

* Amherst goalie Alex Wisco was fantastic all night, but stood even taller in the third period with 17 of his 37 saves, a figure that matched his career high. 

* With 1:05 left in the game, Burke netted an empty-net goal et up by Toporowski, a goal that proved necessary when Williams countered with a goal that came wit 25 seconds left on the game clock and made it 4-3.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* There were six penalties in the game, five called on the Mammoths. 

* Williams outshot the Mammoths, 40-36.
