Luca's late goal nets Mammoths 2-2 tie with Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Ryan Corcoran and Bobby Luca each had a goal and an assist Friday night as the Amherst College men's hockey team battled back to tie rival Williams, 2-2, at Lansing Chapman Rink.

It was Luca's goal with 5:05 to go in the third period that knotted the game 2-all. The Mammoths moved to 14-5-4 overall, and 12-3-2 in conference play, while the Ephs are now 7-14-2 overall, and 5-10-2 in the NESCAC. Amherst concludes its regular season with a 4 p.m. game at Middlebury Saturday.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Luca's game-tying goal came directly after a timeout called by Mammoth head coach Jack Arena and his staff. Matt Toporowski won the face-off and pushed the puck into the left corner of the Ephs' goal. A clear attempt caromed off an Ephs' skate near the blue line, and Luca picked up the loose puck and fired it on the net. Corcoran managed to control the puck in a scrum and backhanded a shot that was saved but Luca, following the play and now in the crease area, slid the rebound into the right side of the goal.

* With 61 seconds to go the Mammoths went on the penalty kill. Williams managed one shot with 22 seconds left but Amherst goalkeeper Dan Dachille was up to the task.

* Amherst began the overtime period a man down but managed to kill off the final 59 seconds of the power play as Greg McGunigle came up with a big block of a shot and another Williams attempt clattered off the post. Tyler Bourque had a shot from the high slot in the waning seconds, but it was sticked aside.

* The Mammoths had taken a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to some great work in the left corner by Luca and Corcoran. Battling for possession, Luca one-armed a pass from along the boards at the lower circle. Corcoran picked it up in the corner and skated out to the goal as an Eph defenseman went around the goal on the right side. Seizing the opportunity, Corcoran flipped to his backhand just in front of the crease and slid a shot past the goalie with 15:13 left in the frame.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst outshot its hosts, 34-30, in the game. Dachille finished with 28 saves on the 30 shots he saw. Cal Sandquist made 32 saves for Williams, including 11 in the third period.

* The Mammoths held a slim 30-27 edge in face-offs won. Zachary Murray accounted for the difference, winning 11 of 18 face-offs he drew.

* Amherst blocked 8 shots in the game, with McGunigle blocking four on his own.
