SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- A 14-run second inning was too much for the Amherst College baseball team Wednesday as the mammoths dropped a 27-12 decision to Western New England University at Trelease Memorial Baseball Park.
The Mammoths fell to 6-2-1 on the season while WNEU improved to 8-2-0. Amherst is scheduled to host a doubleheader Saturday against Brandeis beginning at noon.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Down 16-0, the Mammoths rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth.
Jack Sampedro led off with a single and
Jack McDermott drew a walk.
Ryan McIntyre basted a shot to straightaway center field that hit off the fence for an RBI double.
Jackson Reydel's grounder to short scored McDermott with the second run and when
Jack Dove's grounder to short was misplayed, McIntyre scored the third run.
* Down 21-5 entering the top of the 8th, Amherst rallied for six runs to make it 21-11. Sampedro, McIntyre, Reydel, and Dove had RBI singles in the inning.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths did have 14 hits in the loss. Sampedro was 3 for 4 with one walk. He drove in a run and scored two runs. McIntyre was 3 for 6 with 3 RBI. He also scored twice. Dove was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored. Reydel was 2 for 6 with two RBI and a run scored.
Ben Smith was 1 for 2,
Nick Addison 1 for 4, and
Michael Perales 1 for 1.
* WNEU had 18 hits, drew 10 walks, had eight batters hit by a pitch, and were the benefactors of four Amherst errors.
