AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's lacrosse team scored seven third-quarter goals to pull away for a 17-8 win over Springfield College on Wednesday evening at Gooding Field.
The Mammoths, ranked ninth in the nation in the latest USILA Division III poll, improved to 4-1 this season with their third straight win, while the Pride fell to 2-5.
The Mammoths are back in action on Saturday (March 25), hosting reigning Empire 8 champion St. John Fisher at noon on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The game started slow offensively as each team scored only once in the first quarter. Senior attack
Tanyr Krummenacher scored his 16th goal of the season midway through the first period for the Mammoths before senior attack Riley Burgmyer leveled the score at 1-1 late in the quarter for the Pride.
* The Mammoths took control of the game in the second quarter with four unanswered goals. Senior midfielder

Bob Gross added to the Amherst lead before Adams closed the half with a goal with 11 seconds on the clock.
* Senior midfielder Jackson Lane opened the third quarter with a goal for the Pride but the Mammoths responded with four goals in 70 seconds. Sophomore attack

Brodie Rayment and Bennett scored in quick succession to give the Mammoths a 9-2 lead.

Bayard DeMallie, Bennett and Gross scored before the third quarter ended, giving the Mammoths a 12-4 lead after seven third-quarter tallies.
* Just like the third, the Pride scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter with a goal from graduate student attack Conor Tracy but once again the Mammoths answered with a run, netting five straight goals to put the game out of reach, including a pair from Gross and the second goal of the season for senior midfielder
Thomas Ehret. The Pride scored three goals in the final five minutes but could not get any closer.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Gross tallied his first collegiate four-goal game to lead the Mammoths. Bennett (3g, 3a) and DeMallie (2g, 4a) each posted six-point games for Amherst, while Adams netted his third hat trick of the season.
* The Mammoths won 17-of-28 face-offs, led by sophomore
Nicholas Kopp, who won 16-of-23 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls.

* Amherst was 23-for-25 on clear attempts while Springfield was a perfect 20-for-20.
