AMHERST, Mass. --
Luke Padian and
Ben Smith homered Tuesday as the Amherst College baseball team rode a eight-run second inning to a 14-3 victory over Brandeis University at Memorial Field.
Amherst improved to 10-7-1 on the season. The Mammoths host Salve Region Wednesday . First pitch is 3:30 p.m. The Judes dropped to 5-18.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Brandeis jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first.
* Amherst rallied for eight runs in the second inning and did not look back. Padian led off the frame with a long solo home run to right field, his team-leading third of the season.
Jackson Reydel followed with a single up the middle.
Javier Irizarry stayed hot with a line-drive double into center field. When the center fielder bobbled the ball, Reydel raced all the way hme from first to tie the score. Smith then crushed a ball to left-center that cleared the fence for his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot that gave Amherst its first lead, 4-2.
* After the first out,
Jack Boyle got things going again with a single to center field. He promptly stole second.
Jack Sampedro then lined an RBI-single to center for a 5-2 lead.
Jack McDermott lined a single to left and
Ryan McIntyre was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That brought up Padian for the second time in the inning and he lined a one-hopper through the right side of the infield for a two-run single. Reyel then beat out a double-play grounder on a close play at first as McIntyre scored for the 8-2 lead.
* Irizarry added a two-run double down the left-field line in the fourth for a 10-3 lead. In the fifth, McDermott had an RBI-double and Padian an RBI-single for a 12-3 advantage. In the bottom of the seventh,
Tylon Crump Jr. lashed a game-ending two-run single through the right side.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst finished with 14 runs on 14 hits and did not commit an error.
* Padian finished 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and a double.. Irizarry hit 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a pair of doubles. Boyle was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Tristan Kim earned the win, going three innings of one-hit relief. He walked one and struck out three while improving to 3-0 on the season.
