#7 Mammoths' amazing comeback thwarted by Williams in OT, 11-10

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- An amazing fourth-quarter road game comeback fashioned by the Amherst College men's lacrosse team was thwarted by rival Williams College Saturday when the Ephs scored 2:41 into overtime to walk away 11-10 victors on Farley-Lamb Field. 

Amherst trailed 3-1 after one quarter, 6-2 at halftime, and 9-4 entering the fourth quarter but stormed back to tie the game with just 20 seconds left. 

With the loss, the Mammoths are now 9-3 overall and 5-3 in conference play. Williams is 7-5 and 5-3. Amherst next faces Middlebury on the 22nd at home for its Senior Day Game. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Bob Gross got the comeback started in earnest with a man-up goal 2:33 into the final stanza. Jake Bennett assisted on the goal that made it 9-5 Williams. Shortly thereafter senior Robinson Armour scored his first goal of the season with 9:34 remaining in the game to make it a three-goal game. 

* After Williams scored to make it 10-4, the Mammoths really got busy, scoring four times in the final 6:26 to tie the game 10-all and send it into overtime. 

* Matt Adams made it 10-7 off a Bayard DeMallie assist with 6:26 left. Tanyr Krummenacher scored just 16 seconds later, an unassisted tally which was his 39th of the season. Only 66 seconds later, Krummenacher had his 40th goal of the season, one which was unassisted and came with 5:06 left to make it 10-9. 

* For nearly five minutes Williams held off the Mammoths. Mitch Likins made a big save with 2:18 left to keep it a one-goal game for Amherst. Finally, with 20 seconds left in the contest, Adams scored again for the Mammoths to tie the game 10-10. Gross assisted on the score. 

* Amherst won the face-off and had one shot that went wide before calling a timeout with six seconds remaining. Krummenacher got off a shot at the game's final buzzer but it was saved. 

* The Mammoths won the face-off in overtime but turned the ball over. Likins made one save on the Ephs' possession, but a shot by Jesse Shapiro at 2:41 found the net and ended the spirited battle. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst outshot Williams, 39-35, in the contest. The Mammoths also had an edge in groundballs, 31-30. 

* The Mammoths were perfect in clear situations, going 23 for 23. However, they turned the ball over 21 times to the Ephs' 14. 

* The Mammoths had a huge advantage on the face-off, winning 18 of 25 in the game. 

* Individual leaders for Amherst included Nicholas Kopp who won 17 of 24 face-offs he took. 

* Ryan Rahbany and Lawson Laverty led Amherst with two caused turnovers each. 

* Kopp and Rayment had four groundballs each to lead the team. 

* Likins finished with 13 saves for the Mammoths.
