AMHERST, Mass. -- In a well-played game Friday at Memorial Field, Tufts scored twice with two outs in the 8th innings and held on to clip the Amherst College baseball team, 4-3. 

The Mammoths fell to 8-6-1 overall with the loss while Tufts improved to 12-5. The two teams face each other in a doubleheader Saturday, back on Memorial Field. The first pitch of the opener is slated for 12 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst trailed 1-0 Friday entering the bottom of the fifth, but tied the game when Ben Smith laced a double down the left-field line and scored on Jack Sampedro's two-out RBI-double to center field. 

* The Mammoths took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Luke Padian reached on an error with one out. One out later, Jack Dove drove a bal down the left-field line that went for a double and allowed Padian to score all the way from first base. 

* Tufts tied it with a run in the seventh and took the lead on two, two-out bloop singles in the top of the eighth. 

* The Mammoths rallied in the bottom of the frame when Jack McDermott led off with a double and scored one-out later when Padian ripped an RBI-single into right-center field. The Mammoths had the tying run on second but could not produce the tying run. In the ninth, Tufts' closer Brendan McFall retired the side in order to close out the visitors' victory. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst starter E.J. Nevills was sharp, going the first five innings and giving up one unearned run on two hits and three walks. He struck out five Tufts batters in the process. 

* Amherst had seven hits. Sampedro led the way by going 2 for 4 with an RBI.
