MEDFORD, MA -- Tufts University scored in six consecutive innings Sunday, leading the Jumbos to a 12-5 victory over Amherst in the third-and-deciding game of the two teams' best-of-three NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal series.
Amherst season concludes with a 21-14-1 record. Tufts improved to 28-9.Â
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:Â
* Tufts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second but the mammoths responded right away in the top of the third, tying the game 1-1 after
Jack Boyle doubled into the gap in right-center field and
Jack Sampedro laced a single into left field to score Boyle with the tying run.Â
* Tufts had an answer of its own, scoring once in the third, twice in the fourth, and five times in the fifth to build a 9-1 lead.Â
* Sampedro got one back in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left that made it 9-2.Â
* In the eighth, Boyle drew a walk, Sampedro doubled him to third and
Jack McDermott's double pushed Boyle across to make it 12-3.Â
* In the Amherst ninth,
Jackson Reydel ripped a single and was removed for fellow senior
Tylon Crump Jr. Crump took second. With two outs,
Javier Irizarry blasted a 3-2 pitch the opposite way to deep left-center field. It cleared the fence with ease for a two-run home run that accounted for the final 12-5 score.Â
