Mammoths fall to Tufts in deciding NESCAC quarterfinal game, 12-5

MEDFORD, MA -- Tufts University scored in six consecutive innings Sunday, leading the Jumbos to a 12-5 victory over Amherst in the third-and-deciding game of the two teams' best-of-three NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal series.

Amherst season concludes with a 21-14-1 record. Tufts improved to 28-9.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Tufts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second but the mammoths responded right away in the top of the third, tying the game 1-1 after Jack Boyle doubled into the gap in right-center field and Jack Sampedro laced a single into left field to score Boyle with the tying run.

* Tufts had an answer of its own, scoring once in the third, twice in the fourth, and five times in the fifth to build a 9-1 lead.

* Sampedro got one back in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left that made it 9-2.

* In the eighth, Boyle drew a walk, Sampedro doubled him to third and Jack McDermott's double pushed Boyle across to make it 12-3.

* In the Amherst ninth, Jackson Reydel ripped a single and was removed for fellow senior Tylon Crump Jr. Crump took second. With two outs, Javier Irizarry blasted a 3-2 pitch the opposite way to deep left-center field. It cleared the fence with ease for a two-run home run that accounted for the final 12-5 score.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst finished with seven hits. Sampedro was 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Irizarry was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

* E.J. Nevills, the first of four Mammoth pitchers on the day, took the loss, falling to 1-1.
