AMHERST, Mass. -- The Amherst College men's soccer team celebrated the Class of 2024 Sunday --
Ada Okorogheye,
Wyatt McCarthy,
Max Landa,
Daniel Arizmendi,
Ben King,
Declan Sung and
Shawn Rapal -- scoring five times in a 5-2 victory over Colby College on Hitchcock Field.
It was the fifth straight win for the Mammoths, who improved to 6-0-1 overall. They will play host to Babson Wednesday at 4 p.m.
"It was great to celebrate our senior class with a win," Amherst head coach
Justin Serpone said. "They have been so important to our program, both on and off the field, over the past four years."
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* For the second straight Sunday, Sung drew a penalty in the box, leading to Okorogheye converting a penalty kick for a goal. Today it happened in the eighth minute, as Okorogheye slid a pass to Sung in the right side on the box and contact with a defender brought him to the ground. Okorogheye followed by calmly sliding a ball to the right and the goalkeeper dove left.
* Sung also had a hand in the next goal. It was nearly a carbon-copy of one the Mammthos scored Saturday as Sung had a throw-in from the right sideline and lofted a perfect ball that passed over one Mammoth to
Simon Kalinauskas, who expertly headed the ball behind him into the far left corner of the goal for a 2-0 advantage.
* It went to 3-0 Amherst in the 20th minute on a great play by
Ignacio Cubeddu. Winning the ball at the end line to the left of the goal, Cubeddu somehow evaded a defender and kept the ball in play, creating space for him to chip a pass to the far right side of the goal, where Kalinauskas was stationed to head it in again for his second goal of the day and a 3-0 lead.
* The Mammoths made it 4-0 in the 56th minute when first-year
Mohammed Nuhu lined up a free kick about 20 yards out just outside of the box and curled a lofted ball toward the left post, where
Fynn Hayton-Ruffner was there to put his head on the ball as it descended, directing it into the lower left-hand corner of the net.
* Two goals from Eduardo Casanova allowed Colby to halve its deficit to 4-2, but Cubeddu concluded the scoring with goal that came with only 31 seconds left in the game for the 5-2 win.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst out shot Colby 13-4, and had 12 corner kicks to the Mules 4.
*
Max Landa and
Juan Perez split time in goal for Amherst, with Landa making the only Amherst save of the game.
* "I've been really impressed with
Riley Priddy," Serpone said. "As a first-year it can be really difficult to step into a defensive role. He's not only done that but done it really well so far. We got a lot of important rest today for some guys. This is an important week for us beginning with Babson on Wednesday. The good news is we still have a lot we can improve on. I'm looking forward to watching us chase our potential."
