Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Murray's Three-Point Night Paces Amherst over Camels, 5-2

AMHERST, Mass. Zachary Murray had two goals and an assist to help the Amherst College men's hockey secure a 5-2 victory over Connecticut College at Orr Rink Saturday night; propelled by a strong first-period during which they netted 3 goals.

The Mammoths advance to a 9-5-0 overall, and a 5-4-0 record for in conference play. Their next opponent is Hamilton College, which they will be hosting at 7 p.m. Friday.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Amherst's first goal of the evening occurred 5:24 into the commencing period. After a puck scrum against the right side of the boards, Murray won the puck and sent it to Ryan Tucker. Bobby Luca, positioned at the low slot then received the pass from Tucker for a one-timer into the net. 
  • Amherst made it 2-0 with 9:52 remaining. Andrew Carmody cleared the puck from the right point, allowing Tucker  to gain possession. Tucker then passed to Murray by the left post, and with a tip-in, Murray extended the Mammoths' lead to two goals.
  • Vincent Velocci  made it 3-0 as h seized the puck in the right corner and sent it to Josh Burke at the right point. Burke's shot toward the goal was deflected by Velocci in front of the net, resulting in a power-play goal with 3:41 left in the opening period.
  • With just 7 seconds left in the first period, the Camels were able to get on the board. First-year Quinn Kennedy fought for the puck by the right corner and slipped it to Andrew Eberling. The puck then traveled to center John Russo in the low slot for a wrist shot into goal. 
  • At 5:51 into the second period, Connecticut College scored their final goal of the evening on a power play. Eberling carried the puck up the ice and executed a behind-the-back pass to Russo, who then made a deceptive pass to Steven Ardagna for his finishing shot at 5:51.
  • During a power play, following a clear into Amherst's zone, Burke played the puck along the boards in Amherst's zone. Murray picked it up, skated down center ice, maneuvered through the Camels' defense, and scored one-on-one against the goaltender at 8:39 in the final period. 
  • The Mammoths' defense held off the Camels in the final minutes of the game, allowing Burke to skate onto a clear and score his second goal of the evening into an empty net with 1:27 left in the game.


BY THE NUMBERS
  • Amherst outshot Connecticut 31-18 with shots on goal. 
  • The Camels won 31 of the 57 draws, with Seth Stadheim securing half of the 26 face-offs he took. On the Mammoths' side, Tyler Bourque won 10 of the 16 face-offs he participated in this evening. 
  • Amherst went 2-5 on power plays and 3-3 on penalty kills. 
  • In net, Alex Wisco saved 16 of the 18 shots he faced on goal.
