WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Cold shooting combined with 26 turnovers turned out to be a lethal combination for the 22nd-ranked Amherst College women's basketball team Wednesday night as it fell to fival Williams in the Ephs' Chandler Gym, 60-52.
The Mammoths fell to 13-3 overall while the Ephs improved to 9-9. Amherst is at Hamilton Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* At one point late in the first quarter, the Mammoths had built a 15-7 lead, but they would shoot just 20 percent (5 of 25) from the floor over the next two quarters, falling behind by as much as 20 points with just over two minutes to go in the third quarter.

Maya Cwalina scored two baskets 12 seconds apart late in the third to cut the Mammoths' deficit to 16 by the end of the period.
* Neither team could score in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter as the Mammoths turned the ball over four times. Finally,
Sylvia Liddle knocked down a three-pointer with 8:10 left in the game that made it 48-35 Williams. With 6:31 remaining, Cwalina came up with a block that led to a three-pointer by
Laura Mendell at the other end of the court and the Mammoths trailed 50-39.
* With 5:17 to go, Mendell hit a pair of free throws and
Macie Nugent followed with a steal and a lay-in that made it a seven-point game. After a bucket from the Eps' Arianna Gerig,
Brooke Ingemi drained a huge three with 3:45 remaining to cut the Ephs lead to just six at 52-46. Ingemi followed that three up with a steal and head coach
G.P. Gromacki called a timeout to set up a play. The Mammoths however turned the ball over on the two ensuing possessions, allowing Williams to push its lead back up to eight.
* A jumper from Cwalina in the paint would make it 54-48 with 2:12 left, but the Ephs would go 6 for 6 from the foul line over the final 120 seconds to keep Amherst at bay.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Although the Mammoths outscored Williams 20-12 over the final 10 minutes, they committed 10 of their 26 turnovers in that stanza.
* Mendell led the Mammoths with 14 points and 4 rebounds. Cwalina scored 8 points and grabbed 2 boards.
Kori Barach and
Reeya Patel finished with 7 points each. Barach led the team with 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Liddle finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds and a team-high 4 steals. Gerig led Williams with 26 points.
