Box Score AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's hockey team demonstrated fantastic work ethic and team spirit at the Orr Rink on Friday evening with a 3-2 win versus the Wesleyan University Cardinals. A goal in the second period and two goals in the third helped the Mammoths edge past their NESCAC rivals who are ranked above them in the national rankings.

Amherst improved to a 11-6-0 record overall and will have just less than a day to recover and prepare for their next game. The Mammoths will host their next match against the #20 Trinity College (Conn.) Bantams at Orr Rink on Saturday, January 27.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • At 0-0, Andrew Carmody opened the scoring at 06:20 in the second period to give Amherst the lead. Vincent Velocci picked up a floating puck in the right corner and had space to turn and pick out an Amherst teammate. Velocci passed the puck to Josh Burke, who had a pocket of space deep on the right side. Burke directed the puck to Andrew Carmody to the left of the goal. With a first-time hit, Carmody fired the puck past Wesleyan goalkeeper's right-hand side into the back of the net to get Amherst on the board with a power play goal.
  • Wesleyan then equalized just forty seconds into the third period. Owen Sweet and Jack Kane collaborated to assist Connor Sutherland's third goal of the season. Amherst's goalkeeper Alex Wisco stopped the initial effort from Owen Sweet but couldn't stop Sutherland's effort from crossing the goal line.
  • Less than a minute later, the Mammoths regained the lead. Michael Gallagher scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Ryan Tucker and Zachary Murray. From just in front of the blue line, Gallagher deflected a shot into the net at point-blank range.
  • At 13:09 in the third period, Amherst extended their lead and made it 3-1 versus the Cardinals. Ryan Tucker netted his tenth goal of the season, assisted by Ben Kuzma and Quinton Fox. Tucker redirected Kuzma's shot from the left side past the Wesleyan goalkeeper in a power play goal.
  • Wesleyan pulled one goal back a minute-and-a-half later. At 14:57 in the third period, DJ Dixon scored his fifth goal of the season in an unassisted goal.
  • In a nerve-wracking end to the game in which the Cardinals had a few chances to level the scoring, Amherst clung on for their fourth home win of the season.
