Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#12 Amherst fall to #2 Tufts in midweek battle, 1-0

AMHERST, MA — On Hitchcock Field, the #12 Amherst College men's soccer team looked to build on its eight-match unbeaten run and five consecutive wins versus the #2 Tufts University Jumbos. In a hard-fought battle between two of the three highest-ranked NESCAC teams, the Jumbos prevailed with a 1-0 win thanks to Henry Perkins' late goal.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • As anticipated, the match began as a physical contest, with both teams' midfielders effectively disrupting passing lanes and preventing entry into the attacking third. In the opening 14 minutes, only one shot was registered: a strike from the Jumbos' Mason Shultz, which Amherst's first-year goalkeeper Trey Sheppard confidently saved. Amherst responded with their first opportunity in the 15th minute during which senior Wyatt McCarthy's shot was blocked. The Mammoths' first real test for the away side's goalkeeper, Nikola Antic, came when senior Valadez Bush forced him into action for what would be his only save of the half. Amherst's Sheppard stopped a second effort in the 30th minute, marking the last significant action of a tightly contested first half, which ended with limited scoring chances.
  • The game opened up in the second half, with both teams generating more opportunities. Amherst's best chance arrived in the 78th minute when sophomore Mohammed Nuhu sliced through the Jumbos' defense and unleashed a shot, only for Antic to make a composed save.
  • Less than a minute later, the breakthrough finally came. Henry Perkins netted the decisive goal, securing three points for the Jumbos. Daniel Yanez delivered a cross toward the far post, where Max Clivio skillfully headed the ball downward into the six-yard box. Perkins reacted quickly, nudging the ball into the net from close range to bring his season tally to three goals.
  • Amherst pressed for an equalizer in the final 11 minutes but found no way through the Jumbos' defense. Antic denied McCarthy again, and senior Fynn Hayton-Ruffner's effort was blocked. The game ended as a hard-fought 1-0 victory for the visitors who remain at the top of the NESCAC.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst had 10 shots (3 on goal); Tufts had 5 (4 on goal).
  • Amherst fouled 12 times throughout the match - two fewer than Tufts.
UP NEXT:
  • Amherst now holds a 8-2-2 overall record (4-2-1 versus NESCAC opposition).
  • Up next: the Mammoths will be back in action on Saturday. Amherst will travel to Clinton, NY, to face the Hamilton College Continentals on Love Field at 1:30pm.
QUOTES - Amherst Head Coach, Justin Serpone:
  • "I thought today was a great game. It was going to be one play that decided it and unfortunately for us, it went to them.
  • I thought we did a lot of good things today. Fynn was outstanding.
  • Hamilton is a really good team, who played great against us last season. We'll have our work cut out for us, on the road, come Saturday. Should be another great NESCAC matchup."
