Mammoths fall to Bowdoin in OT on Senior Day

AMHERST, Mass. – A goal by junior Molly Donegan and a penalty save by sophomore
goaltender Grace Puchalski were not enough Saturday afternoon at Hill Field, where the 17 th -
ranked Mammoths fell to the Bowdoin field hockey team 2-1 in overtime on Senior Day.

The Mammoths dropped to 8-6 overall and 3-6 in conference play. Bowdoin improved to 6-8
overall, 3-6 in the NESCAC. Amherst will close out the regular season with a 6 p.m. match
against Trinity College on Tuesday at Robin L. Sheppard Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

*Senior Sam Maynard created a dangerous opportunity for the Mammoths in the fourth minute
after intercepting a wide clearance from Bowdoin goaltender Lauren O'Donald outside the circle,
but a tackle from O'Donald at the right post ended Maynard's momentum.

*With ten minutes remaining in the stanza, Senior Charlotte Domittner denied an ambitious run
down center field by Bowdoin forward Mackay Bommer, recontroling possession for the
Mammoths.

*Puchalski came out strong for the Mammoths with under two minutes remaining in the first
quarter, blocking a penalty stroke fired into the left corner by Bowdoin forward Olivia
Cunningham to keep the Polar Bears scoreless.
'
*The Mammoths jumped out in front in the eight minute of the second quarter thanks to an
excellent counterattack initiated by Junior Justine Liguori. Liguori stole the ball from a Bowdoin
midfielder at the 23-meter line, slotting the ball towards the circle and into the diagonal run of
first-year Caroline Busler. The speedy forward wove around her defender and into the circle,
finding Donegan at the left post, who took a touch before blasting her shot into the middle of the
net. The goal gave Amherst a 1-0 lead and Donegan her seventh goal of the season.

*The Polar Bears found their equalizer six minutes into the third quarter. Off Bowdoin's fourth
penalty corner of the game, the ball zigzagged between players across the circle before finding
Bowdoin junior Mackay Bommer behind Amherst's defensive line at the left post. Bommer
scooped the ball between the posts to tie the match 1-1.

*A penalty stroke awarded to Amherst in the eight minute of the fourth quarter threatened a
second goal for the Mammoths, but Liguori's shot blasted just wide of the net, ricocheting off the
left post to leave both teams tied heading into overtime.

*Senior Maya Malenfant scored the winner for Bowdoin four and a half minutes into overtime
after she received the ball from Ferguson at the center of the circle and turned to fire the ball
past Puchalski into the lower right corner of the net.

BY THE NUMBERS:

*Amherst held a strong advantage in both shots and shots on goal, 15-7 and 11-5, respectively.
Amherst was also awarded more than double Bowdoin's corners, 10-4.

*Bowdoin out-saved Amherst 9-2, with 6 of Bowdoin's saves coming in the 4 th quarter alone.
