Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#10 Mammoths Ice Polar Bears 3-1

AMHERST, MA. – A brace from sophomore Mohammed Nuhu sealed another NESCAC win for the No. 10-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team on Saturday, Oct. 26. Taking on Bowdoin in their last home game of the with a homecoming crowd in attendance, the Mammoths put three in the back of the net to romp past the Polar Bears, 3-1.

With the win, the Mammoths improve to 10-2-2 this season, while Bowdoin slips to 7-4-3 in 2024. Amherst has just a few days of rest before they play their final regular season contest on Tuesday, Oct. 29. They will face Trinity in their final contest of the regular season, with kickoff scheduled for 8pm.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
 
* Amherst came out of the gates firing, earning a quick corner before getting their first goal less than two minutes into the game. Senior Fynn Hayton-Ruffner bagged his fourth goal of the season with an unassisted 2nd minute strike, which came on the Mammoths' first shot of the game.
 
* The game seemed relatively open from there, with only one more shot from either team until the Mammoths netted their second. This time it was Nuhu who got on the scoreboard, with an assist from senior Micah Valadez Bush. With the goal, the sophomore extended the Mammoths' lead to 2-0 just 17:00 into the game.

* Another stretch of back-and-forth play ensued, with Bowdoin pulling a goal back in the 30th minute, and the first half would end with the Mammoths leading 2-1.
 
* Amherst iced the game in the 48th minute, taking just over two minutes to extend their lead to 3-1. It was Nuhu that scored his second of the match, netting off of a pass from senior Ben Clark-Eden to widen the Mammoths' advantage to two goals.
 
* The rest of the game was highlighted by the Amherst defense, with Riley Priddy, Simon Kalinauskas, Johnny Novak, Clark-Eden, Valadez Bush, and others contributing to keeping the Polar Bears from narrowing the gap. Ultimately, the home side was able to see out the rest of the game and take the 3-1 victory.
 
BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths again outshot their opponent, this time by a 12-3 margin, with six of those shots on frame. However, the Polar Bears won more corners on the day (3-2) and received more cautions from the referee.
 
* Nuhu's two-goal performance was his second multi-goal game of the season.
 
* First-year Trey Sheppard got the start in net for the Mammoths and made one on the day.
