Strong first-half sends Mammoths past RIC, 79-55

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- C.J. Mitchell scored a game-high 19 points and three other Mammoths reached double-figures, sending the Amherst College men's basketball team to a 79-55 victory over RIC Thursday night at the Anchormen's Murray Center.

Amherst improved to 3-1 with the victory while RIC fell to 2-3. The Mammoths travel to Arlington, Va. this weekend for Marymount's Coto Tip-off Tournament. They will be Lynchburg Saturday at 3 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

*  Amherst trailed 6-5 early on but a Bobby Sommers fast-break lay-up off a steal and assist from Mitchell gave Amherst a 7-6 lead. The Mammoths would never trail in this game again.

* After a 2:22 span in which neither team could score, Ryker Vance ended the drought with a turnaround jumper from the paint which made it 9-6. RIC's Robinson O'Hagan then knocked down a three-ball that tied the game at 9-all, but Vance was the main in the moment once again, scoring a second basket from the paint off a Mitchell assist for an 11-9 lead. Vance then blocked a shot that led to a Mitchell jumper and a 13-9 lead.

* With 7:14 to go in the half, Marc Garraud came up with a steal and then race down the court, pulled up and drained a three-pointer for a 30-20 Amherst lead.

* A steal by Sommers led to a Will Scherer bucket from the paint and a 37-26 Mammoth with 4:01 remaining in the half. With 1:57 to go, Chris Hammond drained a trey for a 40-28 lead and Sommers two free throws with 11 seconds to go that allowed Amherst to head into the locker room at half up 14, 42-28.

* Mitchell drained a jumper 16 seconds into the second half, upping the Mammoths lead to 16. Amherst would never lead by less than 12 points following that basket.

BY THE NUMBERS:

*  Hammond finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Sommers and Garraud each had 10 points. Elias Chin finished with 7 points and 7 rebounds while Scherer notched 6 points and a team-high 9 reounds.
