Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mammoths drop tight battle with Springfield, 51-48.

AMHERST, Mass.—A three-pointer from Annie McCarthy and two layups in the final four minutes of the game almost rallied the Mammoths to victory in LeFrak Gym Saturday afternoon, but the rally fell just short as the Amherst College women's basketball team was defeated by Springfield College on Hixon Court, 51-48.

The Mammoths (3-1) will face John Jay College in an away game Tuesday at 5 p.m. in New York, NY.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst had the lead early on following two successful free throw attempts from Laura Mendell 10 seconds into the game. With seven minutes and 45 seconds remaining in quarter one, Mendell scored again for the Mammoths, putting a three-pointer on the board. Anna Tranum followed suit, scoring a three-pointer with three minutes and 12 seconds left that brought the Mammoths within two points at 16-14.

* McCarthy led the Mammoths in terms of points in the second quarter, following her three-pointer with a little over eight minutes remaining and a layup two minutes later. Kori Barach and Tranum also contributed to the scoring scene with an early three-pointer from Barach six seconds into the quarter and a layup and two successful free throw attempts from Tranum with less than five minutes remaining.

* Neith team would score over the final 3:35 of the half, and Amherst trailed by two, 30-28, at the break.

* The Mammoths put seven points on the board in the third quarter. Maya Cwalina had an impressive defensive rebound early in the quarter which set up Barach to score a layup with eight minutes and 17 seconds on the clock. Renwick also scored on a free throw attempt for the Mammoths with a minute and 11 seconds remaining, but as injuries mounted for the home team, Springfield began to pull away and the Pride led 43-35 after three quarters.

* The fourth quarter was particularly strong for Amherst, with the Mammoths scoring 13 points compared to Springfield's 8. Barach had an impressive steal that she turned into a layup with eight minutes and 25 seconds remaining in the game. The Mammoths rapidly closed the gap in the final five minutes, with Sylvia Liddle scoring on a jumper with four minutes and 17 seconds remaining and McCarthy putting three points on the board 37 seconds later. Liddle and McCarthy each scored layups in the final minute for the Mammoths, with 51 seconds and 33 seconds remaining on the clock, respectively.

Amherst had the ball down three in the closing seconds, but a trey attempt would fall short and Springfield walked away 51-48 winners.
