AMHERST, Mass. - Despite a 45-29 advantage in shots and five power-play opportunities, the Amherst College men's hockey team fell to Little 3 rival Wesleyan, 3-1, at Orr Rink Sunday afternoon.
Amherst is now 0-2-1 on the season. The Mammoths travel to Burlington, Vt. Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game against St. Michael's. Wesleyan picked up its first victory of the season and is now 1-3-0.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst took a 1-0 lead mid-way through the first period. With goalkeeper Connor leslie off the ice for an extra skater in a delayed penalty situation,
Matt Toporowski picked up the puck in the neutral zone, skate into the Cardinals' end and slid a pass to
Zachary Murray. Murray took a couple of strides and found Toporowski unattended at the bottom of the right face-off circle. Toporowski one-timed Murray's pass past Wesleyan keeper Patrick McDevitt for a 1-0 lead.
* Just 1:40 later, Wesleyan tied the game at 1-1 on a power-play goal from Ethan Davidson.
* The Cardinals had the better of the play in the middle stanza, out shooting Amherst 18-9, but Leslie stopped all 18 shots he faced as neither team could find the back of the net.
* The scene was reversed in the third period as Amherst held a 16-3 edge in shots. However McDevitt stood on his head several times to keep the game tied 1-1. Early in the frame
Ryan Corcoran, Quinton Govr and
Andrew Carmody fired off three shots in a 9-second span but could not find the back of the net.
* The Mammoths went on their third power-play of the game with 14:56 left in the period, They were able to create four shots, two by Zach Jesse and one by
Ben Kuzma, but could not best McDevitt.
* With 8:33 left in the game Wesleyan took the lead on a goal by Danny Judge, who took a pass in the neutral zone, tapped the puck by a Mammoths defender as he skated into the Mammoths end and buried a shot in the lower left corner for a 2-1 lead.
* Amherst pulled Leslie in favor of an extra skater late in the frame, but Wesleyan took advantage, scoring an empty-netter with 25 seconds lef tto seal the win.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Leslie finished with 26 saves while McDevitt had 44.
* Wesleyan was 1 for 2 on the power play, Amherst 0 for 5. The Mammoths mustered 13 shots but could not score.
* Wesleyan won 32 of 61 face-offs in the game.
