Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Burke's Mad Dash Beats the Clock, and the Ephs, Lifting Mammoths to Thrilling 4-3 OT Win

AMHERST, Mass. - Josh Burke collected the puck behind his own goal with only 9.8 seconds remaining in overtime Saturday. Seven seconds later, his shot from the mid-slot found the back of the net with only 2.8 seconds left in the extra session to give the Amherst College men's hockey team and improbable, thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 win over rival Williams at Orr Rink.

The Mammoths concluded play for the semester with a 4-3-1 record, 2-2-1 in conference play while the Ephs fell to 3-5-0 overall, 2-4-0 in the NESCAC.

Burke led Amherst with 1 goal and 2 assists.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst entered the third period trailing the Ephs 3-1 despite outshooting them 28-9 over the first two stanzas.

* However, just 1:58 into the frame, Mammoth Max Thiessen received a pass from Matt Vander Vort at the left point and whistled a low, hard shot that threaded the needle and snuck between the pads of Eph goalkeeper Cal Sandquist to make it a one-goal game.

* Despite two power-play opportunities in the third period, the Mammoths found themselves still down 3-2 entering the final minute. With Mammoth goalie Andrew Palena off the ice for the extra skater, the Mammoths forced a face-off in the Ephs' zone. Matt Toporowski won the draw, and Ben Kuzma scooped up the puck, dropping it back to Burke at the left point. Burke fired a pass down low on the left side that found Bobby Luca behind the goal. With no angle in sight, Luca chose to fire the puck off of Sandquist's back and into the goal tie knot the game at 3-all with only 46.1 seconds remaining in the game.

* That sent the game into overtime. With 37 seconds left in the extra session, a penalty was called on a Williams' player. Toporowski got off a shot, but it was wide and the Ephs dumped the puck into the Amherst zone. That's when Burke took over, cycling behind his goal to collect the puck and make his made dash down the ice. He crossed into the Ephs' zone, and cut slightly to his left when he reached the top of the face-off circle, snapping a shot that beat Sandquist blocker side to earn the win for the Mammoths.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Quinton Grove had the other Amherst goal, that coming in the first period.

* Palena made six saves in the win, Sandquist 43 for the Ephs.
