Mammoths Fall 67-33 to Bowdoin as Polar Bears Snap Win Streak

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Amherst College women's basketball team concluded their 2023-24 regular season on Saturday afternoon on the road against Bowdoin, seeing their six-game win streak come to an end with a 67-33 loss to the Polar Bears.

With the loss, the Mammoths ended the regular season with a 19-5 overall record, including a 6-4 mark in NESCAC play. They own the fifth seed in the NESCAC Tournament, with the quarterfinal round taking place next Saturday, Feb. 17, on the road against Middlebury. Tipoff against the Panthers is at a time to be determined. With the win, the Polar Bears improved to 22-2 on the season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Just like their game the day prior, the Mammoths took some time to find their footing offensively, allowing a 10-2 Polar Bear run to begin the contest --- Maya Cwalina was the lone Amherst scorer. With just under five minutes to play in the first frame, a three from Kori Barach and Cwalina's second bucket of the night brought the margin back down to three at 10-7. However, another Bowdoin run, this time 8-0, saw the Mammoths finish the frame down 18-7.

* The teams traded threes to open the second, with sophomore sharpshooter Annie McCarthy hitting for the Mammoths and Laura Mendell opening her account with a three of her own before the Polar Bears answered back with two scores of their own.

* However, an 8-2 run from the Mammoths got them back in the game. The spark was lit by a Barach midrange jumper. A pair of Mendell free throws, a layup from Alix Stuart and another Barach tally saw the Bowdoin lead shrink from 13 to seven with three minutes to go in the second period, but a Polar Bear three extended the lead to 31-21 at the halftime horn.

* Bowdoin again went on a tear in the third quarter, widening their advantage to 30 and effectively putting the game out of reach in the process. During their 22-2 run, the Polar bears shot 9-of-12 from the field and 1-of-2 from three. The Mammoths finished the quarter down 55-25 with scores from McCarthy and Barach.

* A Reeya Patel three broke a 10-minute streak without a basket in the run of play with 7:05 to go in the contest. The senior also went 2-of-2 at the line late in the contest, and got a tough layup to go with 40 seconds remaining to close the scoring.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Barach lead the Mammoths in scoring once again with 9 points, followed by Patel with 7. Sylvia Liddle lead the team in rebounds with 7, and Barach pulled down 6 and recorded 2 steals.

* The Mammoths pulled down 17 offensive rebounds in the loss.

* The Mammoths struggled to score all day, shooting 17.5 percent from the field in the contest. However, the margin was never more apparent than at the three-point line, with the Mammoths going only 15.4 percent from downtown while the Polar Bears essentially could not miss, converting at a 50 percent clip.
