Stubborn Mules score twice in third to nip Mammoths, 3-1

WATERVILLE, Me.A pair of third-period goals by the Colby College Mules was the difference Saturday as the Mules defeated the Amherst College men's hockey team at the O'Neil, 3-1.

The Mammoths record fell to 11-8-1 overall and 6-7-1 for the conference. Amherst will be on the road again for another conference match hosted by Tufts University next Friday (Feb. 9th) at 7 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Mammoth's first goal occurred on a power-play opportunity, with Josh Burke collecting the puck and passing it to Zachary Jesse by the blue line. Jesse found Tyler Bourque, setting him up for a one-timer that found the back of the net with 2:38 remaining in the opening period.
  • Colby evened the score on a power play 28 seconds into the second period. John McElaney held onto the puck in Amherst's zone and circled back to the blue line to find Henry Molson to his left. Nick Stapleton screened the goaltender for Molson's wrist shot to find its way into the goal.
  • Clay Korpi intercepted the puck along the boards and fed it to Matthew MacDonald, who set up Jayden Grier for the decisive shot into the net at 12:57 in the last period to break the 1-1 tie.
  • At 18:04 in the final period, Jack Sullivan was stationed at his defensive blue line and shot an empty netter to solidify the Mules' victory.
