AMHERST, Mass. – Three third period goals allowed the Amherst College women's hockey team to skate past the Golden Bears Tuesday evening.
Marie-Eve Marleau's goal put the Mammoths up 1-0 in the first period, but the Golden Bears retaliated going up 2-1 in the second period. In the third period the Mammoths tallied goals from
Mary Thompson,
Maeve Reynolds, and
Kelsey Stewart earning them the 4-2 win.
With the win Amherst improves to 17-2-2 and Western New England falls to 13-7-2. The Mammoths play next this Friday, February 9 against Curry College for a 7p.m. puck drop at Canton Ice House, in Canton, MA.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Mammoths started the game off strong, when 2:41 into the first period, Tammy Zhu one-timed the puck from just right of the Golden Bear's goal, but her shot went just wide.
- With 4:04 left the Golden Bears had their first real opportunity at goal with Alyssa Murphy skating through the Mammoth defenders taking a shot low right, but Mammoth goalkeeper Natalie Stott slid to stop the puck.
- With 1:34 left, Mary Thompson skated down the left side of the ice behind the Golden Bears goal. She passed the puck to Marie-Eve Marleau who was sitting right in front of the net, who was able to one-time the puck for a Mammoth goal.
- In the second period, with 13:56 left Ellie Decarlo passed the puck from behind the Golden Bears net to Jayna Park who tried to one time the puck but her shot went wide.
- With 13:42 left Jenna Lynch skated through the Mammoths defense taking a hard shot that went just right. The shot ricochet off the back wall bouncing back in front of the Mammoths' goal, hitting the back of Stott and going into the net and scoring the equalizer.
- With 5:42 left, the Abby Hay passed from bottom left to Kelly Yorkey from high left, where she took a shot that went just right off Stott scoring the Golden BEars second goal of the game.
- In the third period, 5:24 into the period, the Mammoths started on a power play. From far right Thompson took a shot that went to the top left corner of the Golden Bears' net, scoring an equalizer for the Mammoths with 14:12 left.
- With 6:40 left Alyssa Xu took a shot from high right, whiich was stopped by Golden Brears keeper Rieley Jessie-Gerell. The puck was found by Maeve Reynolds who took two toches and shot the puck to the bottom left paste Jessie-Gerrel putting the Mammoths ahead by 1.
- With 6:00 left the Mammoths did it again, when Reynolds passed the puck up to Kelsey Stewart who one timed a shot to the top left of the net, going past Jessie-Gerell, putting the Mammoths up by two and scoring her first career goal.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- The Mammoths oushot the Golden Bears 39-9 in the first period, 33-9 in the second period, and 34-7 in the third.
- The Mammoths won 34 of the 46 face-offs, with Anna Baxter winning 13.
- The Golden Bears where whistled for 4 penalties and the Mammoths for 2. The Mammoths were able to convert one of their power-plays to a goal.
- Jessie-Gerell made 52 saves, 23 in the first and 20 in the third. Stott made 5 saves.
