AUBURNDALE,
Fla. -- The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point baseball team scored in each of the first five innings Momday and held off a ninth-inning rally tp defeat Amherst, 11-7, at Lake Myrtle Park.
Amherst fell to 2-2 on the season. The Mammoths will play a doubleheader with St. Lawrence Tuesday with the first game slated to begin at 3 p.m. The Pointers won their secpnd straight game to improve to 2-3 on the season.Â
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when lead-off batter
Jack Sampedro tattooed a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left field for a home run.Â
* The Pointers responded with three in their half of the first off of starter
Jacob Ribitzki.Â
* Down 8-1 entering the top of the fifth, the Mammoths had no one on base with two outs but struck for three quick runs.
Jack Boyle got things started with a two-out laser past the third base bag and down the left-field line that gave him a double. Sampedro followed with a double of his own to score Boyle.
Jack McDermott then powered a two-run, opposite-field home run over the left field fence to make it 8-4.Â
* The Pointers responded with three more runs in their half of the fifth to take an 11-4 lead.
* Amherst scored a run in the seventh when Boyle led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a Sampedro fly ball and scored on a McDermott groundout.Â
* The Mammoths rallied in the ninth as well, scoring twice before the rally was extinguished.
Ben Smith and Boyle opened the frame with singles and Sampedro was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. A McDermott single to right scored Smith to make it 11-6. A run scored on a double-play grounder, but that was as close as Amherst would get.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst had 11 hits. Boyle was 3 for 3 with a walk and 3 runs scored. McDermott was 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs and a run scored.Â

Tyson Luna threw two hitless innings for the Mammoths, striking out two.
Naaveen Narayanan threw one scoreless inning.Â
