SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --
Jake Bennett scored five goals Wednesday night to lead the 14th-raned Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a 16-6 come-from-behind victory over Springfield College at the Pride's Stagg Field.
Amherst improved to 1-1 with the win, while the Pride fell to 0-4 on the season. Up next for the Mammoths is a 1 p.m. match-up Saturday with conference rival Hamilton at Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Things started slowly for Amherst as it trailed the hosts, 2-1, after one quarter of play.
* Down 3-1 early in the second, first-year
Alex Vlacich started an amazing run for Amherst which saw the Mammoths score 14 of the next 15 goals in the game when
Brendan Reilly sent him a pass from behind the Pride goal and he fired a quick shot into the left side of the goal from the slot.
* It stayed that way for over six minutes, until an inspired effort from Bennett tied things at 3-all. Taking the ball into play from the right sideline, Bennett raced past one Pride defender, around the far side of the Springfield goal and then deked his way around another Springfield long stick, cutting inside of him and flipping a quick shot into the goal.
* Amherst took the lead for good 49 seconds later on a heads up play by Mammoths keeper
Mitch Likins. Likins made save and quickly notice a wide open Bennett about 40 yards down th field. Bennett received the long pass, flipped it to
Bob Gross, who in turn found
Matthew Sheinberg, who then passed it back to an onrushing Bennett, who rocketed a shot from 18 yards out into the right side of the net for the lead.
* Sheinberg made it 5-3 with 24 seconds remaining in the half when he took a pass from
Alex Giacobbe just over midfield, beat his defender as he race down the right side of the slot and fired a shot into the top right-hand corner of the goal.
* After Springfield scored in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter, the Mammoths responded with 10 straight goals over the next 12 1/2 minutes to take a commanding 15-4 lead with 7:40 remaining in the contest.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Bennett had six points in the game, adding an assists to his five-goal night. Reilly had 2 goals and 2 assists in the win. Gross had 3 goals on the night. Sheinberg and Vlacich had 2 goals and 1 assist.
* Amherst had a 56-40 shot advantage and grabbed 38 groundballs to 25 for the Pride.
Nicholas Kopp won 14 of the 22 face-offs he took in the win, and he,
Ryan Rahbany and
Lawson Laverty, led the team with 5 groundballs each. Laverty led the team with 5 caused turnovers while
Ben Bruno had 3.
