AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior
Jack Boyle went 3 for 4 and first-year
Matt Tabet threw six strong innings Tuesday as the Amherst College baseball team snapped Westfield State's six-game win streak with a 10-5 victory on Memorial Field.
The Mammoths improved to 10-4 on the season wit the victory, while the Owls fell to 14-5. Amherst is slated to host Hamilton Friday at 4 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Trailing 1-0 after a half-inning Tuesday, the Mammoths took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Jack Sampedro waked,
Jack McDermott singled and
Ryan McIntyre walked to load the bases.
Luke Padian hit a deep fly ball to right center that scored Sampedro to tie the game. With two outs,
Christian Fagnant hit a grounder to second but reached on an error as McDermott scored the go-ahead run.
* Boyle got things started in the Amherst second with a single up the middle. He took second on a wild pitch and stayed there when Sampedro reached on an error. McDermott waited nicely on an off-speed pitch and drove it to deep right field, where it one-hopped the fence for an RBI-double that made it 3-1. An out later, Padian delivered his second sacrifice fly in as many innings, With two outs, Fagnant ripped a single into right field to score McDermott for a 5-1 lead.
* It was 5-3 when the Mammoths tacked on a run in the third.
Charlie LaFreniere led off with a single. He moved to second when
Tyler McCord's tapper up the first-base line resulted in an out. Boyle scored LaFreniere to make it 6-3 with a single up the middle.
* The Mammoths manufactured a pair of runs in the fifth thanks in part to two double steals and one throwing error. McCord and Boyle were the base stealers in the middle of the action.
* It was 8-3 entering the top of the sixth when Westfield's Sam Palmer unloaded a two-run home run over the fence in left field. In their half of the sixth, the Mammoths answered right back, scoring twice to make it 10-5. Padian led off with a single and, after an out, Fagnant ripped a single down the right-field line. LaFreniere then lofted a sacrifice fly to score Padian. Boyle scored the second run with his third hit, a line drive into center field that made it 10-5.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Boyle has 2 runs scored and 2 RBI with 4 stolen bases to go along with his 3 for 4 performance. LaFreniere (2 for 3), Fagnant and McDermott (2 for 4) each had two hits. Padian was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI.
* Amherst had 11 hits and drew 10 walks from Owls' pitching.
* Tabet went a career-high six frames, giving up nine hits and five runs, four earned. He walked just one and struck out four. Sampedro threw two shutout innings of relief, not allowing a baserunner, and
Adrian Caron also toss a hitless, shutout ninth to close out the game.
