Mammoths drop tightly-contested twinbill to Hamilton

CLINTON, NY -- The Amherst College softball team dropped a tightly-contested doubleheader to Hamilton College at the Loop Road Softball Field, falling in game one 5-2 and dropping the second game, 6-4. 

The Mammoths fell to 7-20 overall and 2-9 in the NESCAC. Hamilton improved to 16-14 overall and 9-7 in conference play. Amherst hosts rival Williams, Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.

Game 1, Hamilton 5, Amherst 2:

* Amherst trailed 2-0 after the first inning but rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of the fourth. Emma Nordstrom drew a lead-off walk and after an out, advanced to second on a Dani Torres Werra single. A wild pitch put runners on second and third. Sadie Pool rolled a grounder to short that was booted for an error which allowed Nordstrom to score. Anna Primozic then dropped down a sacrifice bunt that brought home Torres Werra with the tying run.

* Hamilton scored a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. The Mammoths went in order in the sixth. In the Amherst 7th, Primozic laced a one-out single to left and took second on a wild pitch, but was left stranded by the next two batters.

* Amherst had four hits in the loss. Primozic was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Annalise Knopp was 1 for 4 and Torres Werra finished 1 for 2. 

* Abby Moravek took the loss, allowing 10 hits and five runs, all earned, while walking one and striking out five. 

Game 2, Hamilton 6, Amherst 4

*  The Mammoths trailed 4-0 after one frame, but battled back to tie the score at 4-all with a run in the second, two in the fourth and one in the sixth. 

* In the second, Pool singled and was sacrificed to second by Primozic. After the second out, Abbey Kong worked a walk and Heidi Li singled to center to load the bases. Olivia Aitken followed with a single up the middle to score Pool and make it 4-1. 

* In the fourth, Kong led off with an infield single and took second on a passed ball. .Li dropped down a bunt and reached on an error as Kong scored. Li went to second on a passed ball and to third on a line drive to right off the bat of Aitken. Nordstrom then hit a grounder back to the circle and Li, caught in a rundown, beat the throw home to make it 4-3. 

* In the Amherst sixth, Randi Finkelstein singled and scored when Torres Werra lined a double to the center-field fence. 

* Torres Werra kept the Continentals hitless from the second through the fifth, but in the sixth, an error, double, passed ball and sacrifice fly allowed two runs to cross. 

* In the Amherst seventh, Primozic led off with a single but the next three batters were set down in order. 

* Torres Werra took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs, onlt one of which was earned, while walking one and striking out three over six full frames. 

* Amherst had 11 hits in the second game defeat. Finkelstein and Torres Werra were each 2 for 3. Pool and Aitken were each 2 for 4.
